At These Prices, eBay Is a Steal

The number that I and everyone else will be focusing on is the GMV number, which was disappointing with only 8% growth.

eBay (EBAY) reported second quarter earnings after the close on Wednesday (EBAY Earnings Release) and the stock was crushed yesterday  - down 15% on big volume.

From what I can gather, Wall Street is worrying about the effects of the overall economic slowdown on eBay’s business, with some justification I might add.

Gross Merchandise Volume [GMV] in the auction business was up only 8% year over year compared to 12%-14% during the previous 4 quarters.  U.S. revenues were up only 12% year over year compared to 16%-24% in the previous 4 quarters.  Further, eBay’s third quarter guidance came in a little light compared to Wall Street estimates.

However, the company is a cash machine and represents compelling value at current levels.  For starters, the company has $3 a share in cash and short-term investments with no debt.  So subtract that from today’s $24 price and you get $21. 

The company is forecasting $1.72-$1.77 a share in earnings for 2008.  Taking the middle of the range, that’s a 12 forward multiple. 

Revenue and Net Income, even if they are slowing due to a maturing auction business and the macroeconomic environment, will still almost certainly grow at a faster rate than that over the next 12 months for a PEG ratio (P/E multiple/growth rate) below one.

Free cash flow is usually in line with net income meaning that the quality of earnings here is very high.  Net income isn’t some accounting number.  That’s cash, which is going straight to the company’s balance sheet.

No wonder premiere value shop Longleaf Partners owns 50 million shares in eBay - a $1.2 billion stake that represents almost 4% of all of eBay’s outstanding shares.

Technically, yesterday’s selloff puts eBay at 52-week lows and approaching 5-year lows around $23 reached during the summer of 2006 making for an attractive entry point.

Why would anyone find eBay stock attractive at any price?

A company's value is measured largely upon it's management & quite frankly Donahoe is a miserable failure. The incompetence of his own hand selected staff to "fix" eBay, combined with a technical staff that apparently failed to read beyond Chapter 1 of HTML FOR DUMMIES has rendered the site useless.

This may explain why eBay filed a Form 8-K with the SEC on June 19 authorizing the shareholders to pay 35M to any employee, etc. that can "value" to the company.

Time to abandon ship - eBay is going down. But unlike the Titanic, there will be no survivors because there are no life preservers.

If eBay has all that cash available then why do they not pay a dividend to their shareholders to bolster their stock price?
Could it be that it's all phoney numbers on the books? Possibly another Enron in the making?

I know that is what ebay has stated about auctions, but it isn't truthful. The auction business has experienced a slowdown due to all of the changes made by ebay/Donahoe. All emphasis in now on Fixed Price items, which places auctions at a disadvantage.

As in, Disadvantaged all the way to the back of the bus. Literally. Donahoe publicly stated he dislikes the 'flea market image' of ebay and he has set about to change it.

Ebay Motors has just went through a series of drastic changes, all implemented at Donahoe's direction, and that segment's revenue shows the result of those changes. Of course, it was blamed on the general economy. You bought that, right?

One consequence of those changes is, it has caused sellers to be hesitant to offer high-dollar items at auction, which also adds to the 'auction woes'. The more Hesitation that exists, the more it causes a cyclic effect. Hesitation - uncertainty - fewer high-dollar quality-item listings. That equals less/flat GMV. Understand?

But please don't take my word for it - I'm just an auction seller on the site - I mean, what the hell would I know about such things?! Ebay is trying to push out auctions, replace them with fixed price items (like Buy.com stuff) and (hope/pray) they will generate the same revenue as the previous auction items. It's not working and you're seeing the result.

As far as the "macroeconomic environment" thing is concerned, that's like saying, "the act of finding a bargain and purchasing it has matured". There's a use of that 'matured' word that illustrates just how ridiculous it sounds.

The eCommerce economy may not be in some sort of Booming Stage, but it certainly isn't showing a flat growth. Heck, ebay's GMV isn't even Flat - it is negative. Factor in the rate of inflation; simply the COG this year, compared to last year and anything not above 5% is negative.

You're standing outside a huge steel building that houses the world's best flea market. You're discussing aspects of its business: how's traffic? what's the average purchase amount? are more sellers coming on board, all the time? less sellers? what's the quality of merchandise offered? should I invest my money in this enterprise?

Do you walk around inside the building and ask the actual sellers these questions? No, you ask the guy that owns the enterprise. Now, what do you think he will tell you?

No matter how much you believe that ebay sellers are so pissed-off that they will make mountains out of mole hills, do you really think that we all got together *somewhere/sometime* and came up with the same "outrageous" claims?

Ebay is known as the Auction site, yet ebay wants to be something else. As they change, they struggle to show a very modest bit of growth. As they change, even more, and force out the quality sellers and their goods,

Tony P., great points. Ebay has changed their fees and feedback rules so much that it has driven sellers (and subsequently buyers) away from the site. It is no longer worth it to sell low cost items in bulk anymore. The fees eat up any profits.

eBay wants to be Amazon.

So they but a deal with Buy.com.

Now, 1 in 33 listings at ebay is from BUY (Buy.com)

So instead of earning listing plus final value fees of 8.75% from a bunch of smaller sellers, ebay earns just 1.5% and no listing fees from BUY.

That's a major drop in profit.

eBay wanted to replace 1000 sellers with one big one to improve buyer "experience" by having more "real" companies sell.

But "real" companies are not willing to pay eBays insane fees. So eBay had to cut a deal.

BUY's feedback score is consistently dropping (negative buyer experience) and ebay is making far less money on each sale.

eBay management wants to blame everyone's favorite scapegoat, the economy and a slowdown in e-commerce, for the stagnation in core marketplace. However, they point to PayPal as the shining star in the portfolio. Riddle me this . . . PayPal acts as a payment portal for e-commerce. PayPal is booming. Hence, e-commerce must be doing well or PayPal wouldn't be processing payments like crazed squirrels.

So . . . eBay needs to find another excuse. It needs to look in the mirror. It alienated its customer base - sellers - with policies that basically punish sellers and say that all of the site's problems are with the sellers.

Sellers are leaving or downsizing and they are taking their buyers with them. Sellers are also buyers and they are taking their business elsewhere.

Buy.com churns 151,000,000 individual items per month with a sell-through rate of 2%. At any given time 3 - 5 percent of ALL listings on eBay are from buy.com. Overpriced junk books and computer gear that was readily available from any number of sellers have choked the site.

The SEC filings tell the real tale, e-commerce, as evidenced by the PayPal boom, is leaving eBay behind and management has no clue how to turn it around.

Telling 'buyers' that they have all of the nasty bad-dog 'sellers' under control is a loser's game perpetuated by those who obviously have zero clue about the market and their customers.

Keep it up eBay! Good job!

Can't wait until 3rd quarter results come out. Donahoe's handpicked Buyer Experience Team just dropped a bombshell on store owners when they were opted into a guinea pig test last weekend for the new selling form. It was nothing short of a catastrophy - no sales due to removal of store categories.

And earlier this week store owners reported that eBay screwed up invoices by listing the buyers name & the sellers address, lol. Paypal payments were also sent to the wrong email addresses.

Could it get worse? Maybe but I doubt it.

Along with other recent ridiculous policy changes, eBay instituted a hefty fee increase on items sold.

Why hasn't profit exploded?

Because less expensive items are being offered and sold at the site.

They have just killed the last plan of driving out the 99 cent sellers and bringing in more $1000 item sellers.

Instead, they less of both.

I would have to agree that it will be going down lower in price, my
observation based on the loss of traction in the financial report of
Q2 attributing the 3 point downgrade to the "economy" and the "power
seller discounts", "buyer coupons", and what they refer to as "among
other things" as their list of reasons for why the Marketplaces sector
is flailing. Three investment gurus agreed. What puzzled me was why
they did not seem to know much about the customer base that generates
the income for ebay, the auction sellers, not the bidders/buyers.

In their attempts to re-engineer the site, they have long planned out
(at LEAST 2 years) a complete makeover of the entire site making it
pleasing to the eye, and fun to watch with all the flashing
advertisements! Just think of all the affiliate links they can
generate attention to and drive more hits to their site to search for
the best of the best...

The trouble is, the NEW search has to first be tried out on their
members, randomly, because they want to perform the BETA testing
without paying test subjects before unleashing their gift on the
general public.The search functions have not yet been completed nor do
they work effectively for potential buyers and well stocked sellers
who have most of their lives invested in this business.

Add to that, the most indispensable program interface used for the
last few years, called "MY EBAY" has now morphed into a cartoon-like
caricature of something that looks like it came out of a Jetson's
comic book page.This program interface attempts to integrate the buyer
and seller preferences, but actually compromises the seller's ability
to list, monitor, communicate with buyers, and complete their
financial transactions correctly.This has been a huge surprise to the
sellers of successfully marketed items, who now have to look at empty
sales records and no bids or visits to their auction items.

Credit should be given to the data collectors, since, with their
limited amount of time they have left to address the technological and
logistical problems, they at least attempt to "listen"
nonjudgementally to the cries of despair from the already-stressed-out
auction listers.They cannot, however, do anything more than to report
the difficulties and mistakes of the programming to the development
engineers who have so faithfully carried out the wishes of the CEO's
and Board of Directors, without mentioning a word to the ones who they
collect fees for selling, the sellers.

At this very time, moving to the end of July, there are ebay sellers
and buyers from other countries who have been led into the maze of the
new BETA BEST MATCH search, as if it were a preparation for marketing
meat to the general public, without describing this as it seems...

Many ebay members (5%) have been enlisted by the company to be
unsuspectingly forced into a condition that they refer to as "not
being able to opt out" of the given programming, which, has been
stated, is not yet complete for release! Some of these sellers and
prolific buyers have halted their activities due to the system not
responding to the requested needs for change, in order for them to
complete business transactions.

Obviously, how can the value of the Marketplaces go up higher if
there are sellers who cannot operate the interface of the actual site
itself? How?? and when???The interfaces are getting progressively
more complicated and technologically challenged with each passing day.
With no preparation for this testing, these sellers could have
accelerated their listings before hand, OR they could have volunteered
to test the new versions when they had the opportunity to do so
without being scrambled by a poor program's lack of intuitiveness.Now
they are just angered by the lack of respect they have been paid by
this kind of "last minute surprise" treatment and the inability to use
the older reliable version of the programming to earn their
livelihood.

The buyers are experiencing just as much frustration at the inability
to be able to follow the items they want and can find, IF they can
find them, and that is a BIG if. The only items easily found are those
propagated by the marketing companies who are selling their business
sales programs on the site as a way to save the seller's
business.These sellers have been sitting quietly in wait of a bid,
most of which, their items are scrolled past if the potential customer
wants to even bother turning multitudes of pages, since these items
all look the same with very high fixed prices and free shipping
offers.

Was this the original ebay that made the company the success that it
became? Is it a place to work for the "stay at home mom" or retired
veterans,or the teachers and nurses who need to supplement their
marginal incomes to feed their families?Is it a place where new
businesses can thrive without having to outsource to other countries?

Are the forum boards on the ebay site ONLY populated by flea market
sellers who mail out smoke filled packages to unsuspecting 30
somethings, then complain that they cannot get their ratings high
enough to show up in the searches? Is this the picture that had been
portrayed by the leaders of the industry as the source of their ills?

I think maybe the stockholders and investment gurus should take a
closer look at the over 2500 posts to any one subject, so that they
can judge for themselves, instead of listening to the propaganda by
some,and not being able to analyze the problems independently, without
bias because they didn't do enough homework.

That's about it. Until we all meet again...at another flea market!

Higher Taxes in a Country is the same thing as these idiots are doing (Ebay listing and final value fee's) SLOW GROWTH and shrink the competition, thus less selection higher selling prices by the ones that actually stay ... The caption should read "eBay is a Thief", not a Steal. The fact that millions of sellers are paying for listings that are never found by buyers is a form of internet fraud at its worst. eBay is exploiting sellers by charging fees for services that are not provided as promised. From what I can see from the posting boards, it's not just the small sellers, powersellers or any other specific group. It is all sellers. You list an item, pay the listing fee and hope for a sale. However, it is rather impossible to sell something a buyer can't find. This recent change is all in the name of a better buyer experience.

The other crushing blow to sellers is the Detailed Seller Rating (DSR) feedback system and the way eBay uses this to reward/punish sellers. Buyers fill out a survey style 5-star rating system to rate a seller in four categories. The system is not transparent and sellers cannot see the actual numeric rating response on a scale of 1-5. Sellers are only given the cumulative results of all responses for a rolling 12 month and 30 day average. The rolling average changes daily. Powersellers who are rated about the eBay average receive a fee discount and higher placement in searches. Powersellers rated below the average receive no fee discount, have lower placements in searches and can lose powerseller status and other perks if DSRs fall below a certain level. In other words, eBay has structured a 3 tier selling system that places sellers at a disadvantage based on erroneous statistics and faulty technology. Again, all in the name of a better buyer experience. This system has been in place for more than a year but eBay has not been successful in attracting new buyers with all these changes that make selling impossible for many. Instead they are crushing the livelihood of long term sellers, pitting buyers against sellers, and creating a hostile environment of people who are angry and discontented with the new systems.
