There are many different strategies to trade, and one of them is to look for dividend stocks. Investors like dividend stocks as long-term investments, as these dividend payments tend to protect the stock price from the market volatility that affects non-dividend paying stocks. However, careful analysis of dividend stocks and choosing the right dividend stocks at the right time is critical for investors.

In this article, I will focus on large-cap stocks with a high dividend yield and with their ex-dividend date within the next week (September 17 to September 21). These stocks are screened based on the following criteria:

  • Security Type: Common Stock

  • Market Cap: Greater than $10 billion

  • Dividend Yield: Greater than or equal to 2%

  • Ex-Dividend Date: Between September 17, 2012 and September 21, 2012

1. Xcel Energy Inc (XEL): Xcel Energy Inc engages in the generation, purchase, transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity in the United States. The company generates electricity using coal, natural gas, nuclear, hydro, solar, waste, biomass, oil, and wind energy sources. Xcel Energy has a market cap of $13.7 billion and is currently trading around $28.1 with a 52 week range of $23.48 to $29.92. The dividend amount is 27 cents per share which is 3.84% dividend yield. The Ex-Dividend date is September 18, 2012, Record date is September 20, 2012 and the dividend payout date is October 20, 2012. The stock has 1.66% returns for the year 2012.

2. General Electric Company (GE): General Electric Company operates as a technology and financial services company worldwide. General Electric has a market cap of $228.0 billion and is currently trading around $21.59 with a 52 week range of $14.02 to $21.59. The dividend amount is 17 cents per share which is 3.15% dividend yield. The Ex-Dividend date is September 20, 2012, Record date is September 24, 2012 and the dividend payout date is October 25, 2012. The stock has 20.55% returns for the year 2012.

3. Kraft Foods Inc (KFT): Kraft Foods Inc, together with its subsidiaries, manufactures and markets packaged food products worldwide. Kraft Foods has a market cap of $71.0 billion and is currently trading around $39.99 with a 52 week range of $31.88 to $42.44. The dividend amount is 29 cents per share which is 2.9% dividend yield. The Ex-Dividend date is September 17, 2012, Record date is September 19, 2012 and the dividend payout date is October 15, 2012. The stock has 7.04% returns for the year 2012.

4. Omnicom Group Inc (OMC): Omnicom Group Inc provides advertising, marketing, and corporate communications services in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Omnicom Group has a market cap of $14.1 billion and is currently trading around $53.07 with a 52 week range of $35.27 to $53.29. The dividend amount is 30 cents per share which is 2.26% dividend yield. The Ex-Dividend date is September 20, 2012, Record date is September 24, 2012 and the dividend payout date is October 09, 2012. The stock has 19.04% returns for the year 2012.

5. The Chubb Corporation (CB): The Chubb Corporation, through its subsidiaries, provides property and casualty insurance to businesses and individuals. It offers personal insurance products, such as automobile, homeowners, and other personal coverage products, as well as supplemental accident and health insurance products. Chubb Corp has a market cap of $19.9 billion and is currently trading around $74.91 with a 52 week range of $56.19 to $75.48. The dividend amount is 41 cents per share which is 2.19% dividend yield. The Ex-Dividend date is September 19, 2012, Record date is September 21, 2012 and the dividend payout date is October 09, 2012. The stock has 8.22% returns for the year 2012.
