Apple's Jobs Says He Is Cancer-Free - NYT

The New York Times is reporting that Apple (AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs has “reassured several people” that four years after his surgery to treat a rare form of pancreatic cancer he is “cancer free.”

But the Times also reports that “people who are close to Mr. Jobs” say he had a surgical procedure this year to address a problem that was contributing to a loss of weight.

The Times also said that, according to an industry executive who spoke with Jobs, he had run a high fever for the week preceding his presentation at the recent developers conference in San Francisco where he unveiled the new version of the iPhone. In response to concerns about his appearance at that event, the company had previously said that Jobs had come down with a “common bug” which was treated with antibiotics.

The story also says that Jobs has told several associates as well as some members of the Apple board that he is dealing with nutritional problems in the wake of his cancer surgery.

The issue of Jobs’ health cropped up after a number of people took note of his gaunt appearance at the developers conference (including me); it popped up again in a story this week in the New York Post, and then was magnified by the company’s comment on Monday’s post-earnings conference call that his health is a “private matter.”

Could Steve get a hemorrhoid so the price will drop long enough for me to get in? A hangnail maybe?

5 years post-op is considered the benchmark for being cancer-free. Steve is very close to the 5 year benchmark, and the risk of recurrence is increasingly unlikely the further one gets out. So, I'd say the rumors of recurrence from folks like Blodgett and the NYPost were irresponsible.

the people that jobs brought into his company are very very able and remember jobs picked them--they reflect his future and aapl's future--so much for jobs health

while this shouldn't be a big deal...i agree with tom1234... it does seem like fodder for stock manipulation, so i'm glad to see the good news news finally in print.
