There are many different strategies to trade, and one of them is to look for dividend stocks. Investors like dividend stocks as long-term investments, as these dividend payments tend to protect the stock price from the market volatility that affects non-dividend paying stocks. However, careful analysis of dividend stocks and choosing the right dividend stocks at the right time is critical for investors.

In this article, I will focus on large-cap stocks with a high dividend yield and with their ex-dividend date within the next week (October 08 to October 12). These stocks are screened based on the following criteria:

  • Security Type: Common Stock

  • Market Cap: Greater than $10 billion

  • Dividend Yield: Greater than or equal to 2%

  • Ex-Dividend Date: Between October 08, 2012 and October 12, 2012

1. ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP): ConocoPhillips explores for, produces, transports, and markets crude oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids, liquefied natural gas and bitumen on a worldwide basis. ConocoPhillips has a market cap of $69.9 billion and is currently trading around $57.58 with a 52 week range of $50.62 to $78.29. The dividend amount is 66 cents per share which is 4.59% dividend yield. The Ex-Dividend date is October 11, 2012, Record date is October 15, 2012 and the dividend payout date is December 03, 2012. The stock has -20.98% returns for the year 2012.

2. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (NYSE:FCX): Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold engages in the exploration, mining, and production of mineral resources. The company primarily explores for copper, gold, molybdenum, cobalt hydroxide, silver, and other metals, such as rhenium and magnetite. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold has a market cap of $38.5 billion and is currently trading around $40.5 with a 52 week range of $31.08 to $48.96.
