Tips on Finding Unspoken Perks from your Employer

Most, if not all, employers do not tell you all the benefits of working for them. There are the obvious ones which are highlighted in employee orientations like the health benefits, life insurance, 401K matching, pension plans etc. But employers usually highlight only those benefits where either you or they have to contribute a certain amount of money.

But there are other perks you should look into -- for example, personal banking. Employers too use a bank for their banking needs and that bank offers your employer (and its employees) special priviliges. These priviliges can be substantial -- as in free bill pay, no fee and no minimum balance, free cashiers check, free travellers checks, special rates and lower interest on equity and all other loans and many more.

So find out from your HR dept who the company banks with and it may help for you to bank there as well for all your perosnal financial needs. Sometimes this benefit can be extended to your friends and family as well.

A few other priviliges available, close to your workplace, could be:

* Reduced membership fees at gyms
* Discount at restaurants and other stores
* Discounts on cellphone plans
* Discounts on products from the Partners of your company (Apple and Dell are our company's partners and we get a substantial discount on their products)

All you have to do is state that you are an employee of your company. So, go ahead, take privilige of these 'unspoken benefits' and save!

  • If you and your coworkers have a union at work, you may or may not be eligible for Union Plus discounts depending on the national affiliation of your union. But check anyway: unionplus.com

  • Compare the corporate dell discount to sale prices or coupon codes on the normal consumer side of the site. Coupon codes go up to 35% desktops/laptops over $1000 vs. a more expensive corporate model in the first place that is only discounted probably 10% or so. Pick the best one of course, just examine both avenues first!
