eBay Seller's hearts are pounding

Friday we started to get frantic and panicky inbound calls and emails from sellers that had heard through the grapevine that eBay's new item page that eBay (EBAY) previously been talked about as being in less than 10% 'test' mode, open to lots of changes, etc. is suddenly being talked about as going live for the holidays.  Turns out it was a post the developer blog last night that was the first time it was revealed that this is something that could change by the Holidays.  eBay also introduced another complexity called an iFrame that puts the content of the template into a different domain name to help with some fraud issues.

A seller's item page is where they do all their merchandising and most larger sellers have significant investments in their 'template' (ChannelAdvisor speak for the design of their item page).

While we have a clarification into eBay around this sudden 'get it done for the holidays' kind-of-announcement, I thought it would be prudent to alert people as since we're hear at mid-September, I'm guessing this would definitely be out as early as Thanksgiving and maybe as early as Halloween.  If we assume Halloween, maybe you have a month to month and a half to adapt.  Based on our early investigations the changes needed could be substantial.

Test your listings now
The good news is any seller can see how their template will look in the new item page by following these directions:

  1. Login to eBay under your seller ID
  2. Bring up a live listing
  3. In the upper right you will see a link that offers to show you how your listing looks under the new View Item Page.
  4. Click that link

Challenges with the new design
There's lots of negativity from sellers in general around the new design, but since it looks like its hear to say, I won't spend time on that.  However, some design elements are going to make updating your template a potential MUST.

To understand the challenges, first you have to look at this page eBay provides to identify the various elements of the design (click on image to see an expanded version):

Ebay_item_page

The problem is the width of the description element marked number 4 in the diagram.  The upsell elements 6 and 7 take a good 20-25% of the width and squish the description into a small area.  If your template is wider than this then you get some really weird scroll bars in there that we worry will keep buyers from seeing  a large portion of your template.  We're seeing some designs cut off in weird places, images hidden and a variety of other problems with this setup that sellers will want to have resolved before this goes live or potentially suffer a decrease in conversions and an increase in customer inquiries.

Conclusion
The bottom line is regardless of if this was a mistake and the new new item page isn't really coming out for the Holiday, I think it would be prudent to look at a good 5-10 of your items and start to think about how much work you are looking at and how you could possibly do it by late October.

Scott, I have no current auctions running, but the link to the new view was on my 'recently expired' auctions, so I found the new view listing page. There were no problems with my listings when viewed through that link, at least as shown, and as in, 'so far'.

No doubt they will continue to 'improve' the page and SYI form until it screws everything up completely. Christmas is coming, and eBay will screw it up, some way, some how, depend on it. They do it every year.

A question: Aren't Ebay sellers customers? It seems so to me, since we pay all the fees. Why would one continue to confuse, irritate, harass, and otherwise p.o., ones customers?

Many thanks for the heads up!

Leave it to feebay to break something else just in time for the shopping season. There are droves of other free auction sites out there to test the waters with. Personally I use AlsoShop - alsoshop.com - Get away from feebay - There is life without them!

Your screen shot looks a little better than what I have been seeing at ebay.
The design is set up in such an awkward fashion that it turns off buyers and sellers. It really hurts people that have ebay stores.
Why can't ebay leave the pages as they are now? We need some stability.

One GLITCH to look out for: On items we have listed with a FLAT RATE shipping cost, we are finding that when you click on the Shipping & Payments tab in the new item page that it states: Free shipping for each additional eligible items you buy from burgessauction.
I don't know where it is getting this, on flat rate items, we are usually shipping at less than cost already (trying to work with the DSR policies).
I think the new item page MIGHT be a GOOD thing---if eBay makes it simple for buyers to see USED vs NEW and RETURNABLE vs NOT returnable...that could save us some trouble with the buyers who don't want to read the descriptions carefully. I hate to take any blame from buyers who don't read, but it can be a real hassle finding this information as some buyers try to hide it and even those who post it openly...well, we each put it in a different place.
None of my listings have had the ads scrolling down the right hand side as yet...that looks to be quite distracting and too busy.

Its just amazing what a company will do when its clearly headed in the wrong direction but stubbornly plods on. Expect anything from this "hapless" (as one wall stree Guru called it) company. Thankfully, I gave up and decided to list elsewhere. With ebay's search so screwed up I am not making as many sales listing for free elsewhere as I was paying fees thru the nose on ebay ;-) Its fun to sit back and watch them floundering around now that I don't have to cope with their mania.

Here are just a FEW of the numerous threads, written by VERY DISATISFIED ebayers on ebay's own discussion boards, ANGRY about the new pages. These were written BEFORE the article stating it may SOON be forced on ALL ebayers:

"Test of a new item page design"

    "New Auction Page Layout?!"

"Opinions on the new home page...."

    "OLD PAGE VS NEW PAGE"

    "terrible new page format"

    "New page is a Fiasco!"

"new item page - seen it?"

"Test of a new item page design"

"Ebay new page design is AWFUL"

"Lousy new design for ebay page!"

"Rally against the new page changes!"

"New listing page screwed up my bidding"

"Test of a new item page design"

"NO! NO! NO! TO THE NEW ITEM PAGE DESIGN! IT'S PLAIN AWFUL!"

"YAY OR NAY ON NEW LISTING PAGE DESIGN??"

"HELP! New Search Page Just Showed Up???"

PLEASE keep in mind that ebay IS DELETING multitudes of posts AND is suspending ebayers for being HONEST on their discussion forums. What you will read there from ANGERED ebayers is ONLY the tip of the iceberg!

The new SYI is nothing short of a train wreck. Tried to leave a comment & couldn't because my computer was immediately frozen the moment I clicked on the LEAVE A COMMENT link.

This is extremely disturbing & probably done by design.

Welcome to eBay, where all your dreams may now become nightmares !! eBay has totally lost direction, lost their ability to properly communicate with sellers, which happen to be their PAYING customers. There was a time eBay actually answered their phone in California to assist buyers and sellers with their accounts, however now the company states since they are an online company they don't offer phone service, go to LIVE CHAT. However there is a funny thing here, eBay insists that ALL buyers and sellers have up to date phone numbers on file, if you don't have one.....they will close your account. They state it is CRITICAL that buyers and sellers have that option to communicate with each other. How is it that eBay holds buyers and sellers to this standard of communication, yet they don't look in the mirror and get a clue????? WHY DON'T THEY OFFER THIS SERVICE???? BECAUSE IT COSTS MONEY, GOD FORBID. Live Chat customer service is HORRIBLE at best, today I spent 2 hours on Live Chat with MULTIPLE people to ask a simple question. When I asked one live chat person if they could transfer me to a supervisor, THEY DISCONNECTED OUR LIVE CHAT CONVERSATION. Why would they do this???? FOREIGN COUNTRY EMPLOYEES. I'm not biased with someone in a foreign country that is willing to assist me, I am biased against a customer service group that can't understand simple english and when I ask for a supervisor they drop the conversation so as to not have to worry about getting in trouble. FEAR drives employees to do funny things, including if they don't know the answer, disconnect instead of transfer to a supervisor. This way you never have to worry about getting in trouble from your supervisor. This is the problem with people that do not have to account for their actions, HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE.....and eBay doesn't care.....their saving MONEY. eBay is on their way down, they have lost total touch with reality and the people making the decisions obviously don't have a clue about basic retailing. Being fair to eBayers?? not in their vocabulary if they can make a profit by not treating them fairly. Good luck eBay, this is the internet..........and things change.....QUICKLY.

Ebay stock is at a 52 wk low and is dropping by the minute. Ask your self Donahoe, why is that? I would say, and many millon others that it is because you,the big cheese and continue to throw new policys & changes at us that do not work! What a pompas Ass!! Try restoring ebay to what is once was, & stop trying to make it what you want it to be and maybe you will be able to keep your job! The economy is no excuse, because people are looking for value, ebay should be thriving right now! They are not because sellers can not sell effectively with your new policy's and changes that are in place, and frankly are leaving in drones because they are forced out of business.Your making history Donahue, just like George bush is doing!! We love you!!

Leave it to eBay to continue to make their site worse, every time they try something new. Their biggest season of Christmas, may be what puts them inhole. Donahue has done it again, he has to be the dumbest person I have ever seen run a company! Like the old saying goes, give him enough rope and he will hang himself! Unfortuanatley us too, unless we are smart enough to get out now and find another venue before they go out of business. All you stockholders of eBay should sell, sell, sell, or you will regret hanging on to a lossing website. I am one of the sellers that started in 1998 before they were even on the stock market, no one had ever heard of them, unless you were in the antique and collectible markets. I take it personally that I am one of the many who have helped them become billionares, and this is how he pays us back by sucking the money out of OUR sales!! I suggest Donahue moves his site to Cuba or Venezuela, or North Korea where other dictaorships like him, might welcome him and his policys. I think that any seller who stays on ebay and pays free shipping, outrgeous fees, now having no control on how their pages looks, cannot give buyers any negative feedback, but the buyer can and can acutally get them kicked off eBay are in denial about how much control and money they have lost or are losing by supporting Donahue. I would rather make no money instead of giving in to his dictatoship schemes. I refuse to help make him a billionare when he is robbing us of our income!!! Next month GoAntiques will start their own live and timed auctions, if Yahoo had any sense they are another company in trouble, they would bring back their old auction site and could put eBay out of business, because millions of sellers would flock there, they no longer would have to compete with eBay, which is why they closed their auction site to begin with. If not them then a big company out there will see the oppurtunity for another eBay like auction site, but a fair one like the old eBay. All of us sellers are just waiting for it and we will run, not walk to it. Come on your big guys out there with the money and knowledge of starting another website, we are just waiting for you guys to make your move and I guarantee we will be there!!!!!!

Hey eBay fans. Look ahead to October as here are some BIG changes to the eBay site:

It is rumored that about 15 - 20 new LARGE sellers will be introduced to the site. They will instantly (without having sold 1 single item) be considered as Diamond Power Sellers. They will pay no listing fees and WILL NOT be subject to any DSR's. These are supposed to be in the media and electronics categories. they are doing this in time to have these buyers enough feedback 10,000 or more by the time the real holiday season begins in early november. This is going to SCREW even more eBay sellers.

Not to get off the subject of eBay's self destruction, but has eBay finally shut down the Community Boards and Forums, ex; Seller Central, Front Porch etc...?

Another "glitch"? or just another commie attack on the members to silence them?

Oh, and don't forget to watch the stocks drop! It's more exciting than horse racing!

The new eBay form answers the question no one asked!

Each eBay seller uses their pages to differentiate themselves from competitors.

I found that the new form distorted many of my product images (large image to the top left). It did allow most of my formatting for variable page width, fixed page width and information tables.

The new form did make a LARGE ERROR. I offer free or reduced price shipping, but charge $2.50/$100 value for insurance on Opal & Gemstone Jewelry. The eBay form translates 'free shipping' by also incorrectly telling the buyer that 'insurance' is also free.

I think the new item page looks nice, big improvement on what it it now that's for sure. I don't know why so many struggle with change. Yes, it's not smooth and there are bumps, but do you want to be like Craig's List, and never evolve? The only going for Craig's list is that it's free, the site itself sucks. Featureless piece of crap, I guess you get what you pay for. It's too bad Kijiji came in so late in the game in the US, Kijiji is ten times nicer than Craig's list.

I haven't yet tried listing anything new but so far with the new format find all store items have Money Orders removed from payment options. Tried to move an item from store to auction and realized there is nowhere to do that or to make revisions. A buyer had fits today trying to make a purchase, said it wanted my US address which hasn't changed since I've been selling here.

The ebay disclaimer seems more obvious now at the bottom of the page: "Seller assumes all responsibility for this listing." I will add a disclaimer stating "I am responsible for the item and description only, all other solictations (ebay credit card, experian credit scores, other sellers' recommendations, PAYMENT OPTIONS, etc) are out of my control and have been placed into my listing without my consent."

The new format is weak and looks like something from a new company in the midst of upgrades. What are my $1200/mo fees going for???

Attention all sellers: GET OUT AND DIVERSIFY N*O*W !

This is the "Titanium" time to do so! The Holidays!

    Diversify, diversify, diversify!

    Do not wait ANYMORE!

Why continue to CLING?! You are not wanted at ebay! They do not care if you cannot pay your bills or feed your children! They do not care if you are handicapped, stay-at-home mom, or retired on a fixed income! All the "We're one big happy family!" was a joke!

    Didn't you get that?!

You would think Ebay would learn the lessons learned by AOL, when they started taking their customers for granted. Look at them now. I'm just another 100% feedback, 500+ transaction seller who is leaving Ebay before it gets REALLY bad. They'll start caring when their stock price is at $10 and their potential customers have 5 or 6 great alternatives. Sound like AOL? Yahoo would crush Ebay if they brought back their auction site... do you hear that Jerry Yang???

Yes Ebay keep making your changes... keep telling your mom and pop sellers THEY no longer matter to you. Thank Goodness, there are alternatives who aren't trying to be the next ebay.... who are doing more to promote seller's items then ebay ever did. Its the biggest selling season of the year... and what are you doing for your sellers?

Ebay has lost site of their customer, which is one of the first things any business should do... identify the customer. Ebay's customer is not the buyer, unless the buyers are going to start paying for the priviledge of buying there; whereas, Joe and Jane Seller pay fees to list, enhance, and completed sales.

And to the seller who wants the next ebay... IS THIS TRULY WHAT YOU WANT??? More of this same insanity? Or do you want a site that submits your items to shopper's gateways?

Wise advise was given... diversify. Try several sites. No site can guarantee you sales... NOT EVEN EBAY!

WAS a SELLER on efffin Ebay! I would never return. Provided excellent deals and customer service to my buyers. Where did that get me? NO WHERE! What did that get me? Jealous people, using aliases, giving unwarranted negs to destroy their competition - simply crushing them and attempting to inflict anger and anguish. Honestly, did anyone ever hear of a company NOT HAVING A FULLY FUNCTIONAL TELEPHONE NUMBER??? That's a first for me. Ironically, a seller MUST HAVE CORRECT CONTACT INFORMATION. Double standards and double jeopardy, fact! Does anyone see something wrong with this picture? Who is behind eBay? Why are they the omnipotent ones? One has to wonder, just who is allowing this bizarre behavior. Okay eBay, you do not have a workable, functioning telephone number. I don't buy that. You are on the stock exchange? But you have no contact information. Oh, I know..only the higher powers have that answer. Ebay, you are the biggest criminals I have ever dealt with. If you're setting this up, for your stock to fall intentionally on paper that is, so that big retailers can off their overstock inventory, then why not be fair about it and simply, revamp your site for such? Stop all the confusion with the sellers and REFRAIN FROM STEALING THEIR FEES! In essence, that is what you are DOING. You're making so many changes, essentially to confuse sellers, so that your big retailers can step into the arena and you make even more money, without the hassle. ATTN SELLERS: stop playing into their hands. Their primary objective is outlined above. Simply stated, They do not want to deal with you. Their stock will rise eventually, when all major stores and retailers start selling on eBay with full catalogs available. Only the sellers will not be aware that these companies are the sellers. They will have diamond sellers status. Read between the lines. eBay does NOT CARE ABOUT YOU, YOUR FAMILY, THEY ARE YOUR ULTIMATE DEMISE. LEAVE NOW AND HONEST BUYERS, some advise, LEAVE, TOO! Stop the insanity,. They DO NOT LIKE YOU EITHER, UNLESS YOU ARE BUYING FROM THEIR APPOINTED SELLERS, that will NOT be paying listing fees and no DSR's applied to them. They will be incognito. Do what you feel you shoud do. IMHO THEY ARE THE CRIMINALS AND BRAIN TANKS BEHIND THIS ENORMOUS CONSPIRACY. WHY CAN'T ANYONE SEE THIS? DON'T ALLOW THE LUST OF MONEY TO CONFUSE YOUR ABILITY TO THINK INDEPENDENTLY AND CLEARLY. BREAK AWAY FROM THIS CRIMINAL SITE. NO CUSTOMER SERVICE, NO TELEPHONE NUMBER = A DEAD END. There are other venues out there, start looking. Do not depend on Yahoo to make a comeback anytime soon. They, too are watching eBay very carefully as eBay will launch undercover diamond status power sellers to crush you like an ant. THESE SO CALLED APPOINTED SELLERS ALREADY HAVE NEGOTIATED WITH VARIOUS COMPANIES TO SELL ON EBAY. Bear in mind, eBay WILL BECOME ONLY THE LIASION, with the power house sellers, in regard to their cut of the cash. $$$$$$ End of story.

Well I was going to look at their stock but the fact they do not have a phone # reminds me of the old AT&T company in the 90s who screwed up every account and the help lines had no power to fix it.

If you are a providing a service and you skimp on what you are providing then why do you exist. Concentrating on a few large sellers is putting all your eggs in one basket since the competition will take notice and beat you.

"The changes made to eBay is best for the future of the eBay community.Seller satisfaction is high, and listings are up."

WOW! Do you write for John McCain???

Seller satisfaction is at an ALL TIME LOW pal! If you can't see that then perhaps you are who you're name says you are.

The new item page does not let you revise your listing. This may be a BETA problem, however, it was impossible to change back to the old view, once I had clicked on the link to check out the new page. They used ot have an "opt out" link at the top of the page, which has now been removed. I had to request help on the community boards to see if anyone else knew how to get out of this trap.

If you should experience that particular problem, you must clear your browser history and cache to be able to return to the "old" page.

Seller satisfaction is at an all time low because sellers can no longer screw over buyers. If a buyer pays you timely, the seller has no right to leave negative feedback. I have 100% positive feedback as a buyer and I can't count the number of times that a seller has said, after you leave me positive feedback, I will leave you positive feedback. My response is "I paid you within 1 minute of the auction closing, I deserve my positive feedback." If I leave you negative feedback because you sold me some "lightly used" clothing that has been worn 400 times and you are trying to pull the wool over my eyes, that shouldn't affect my feedback. And ebay agrees. The new policies protect the honest buyers. If I wanted to get ripped off at a flea market, I wouldn't get online.
