  • Nokia Is Neither HERE Nor There [View article]
Andreas.. Nicely reasoned article thank you.. I have to ask you though, that even with all of your points, you didn't value HERE. How much would you value it at? Regardless of how much it was bought for then, it must be worthy of a valuation considering it is integral to Nokia, Microsoft and the W8/WP8 ecosystem.

  • The iWatch Debacle Is Due To Apple's Low R&D Spend [View article]
    Thanks for your comment Tom
    - You should read this story about the leaks Apple has probably engaged in regarding the iWatch story:
    http://bit.ly/18nC3ts#awesm=~obRiLMOjLomlZd

A quote: NOT my words -----

........."Does no one else think it’s kind of remarkable that this unreleased product suddenly starts showing up in dozens of blog posts and press stories? And that these leaks happened, coincidentally, right after Apple’s stock endured a brutal slide from just above $700 in September to a low of $435 in January?

The last stock plunge took place after Apple reported disappointing earnings for the holiday quarter, and ended up treading water in the $450 range. That was Jan. 28.

Note what happens next. On Feb. 5, the Wall Street Journal reports that after taking a beating on Wall Street, Apple has been “subtly increasing some of its PR,” doing things like sending reporters “more favorable third-party reports on the company.”........"

  • The iWatch Debacle Is Due To Apple's Low R&D Spend [View article]
Thanks for your comment Michael - Yes, what is worrying is that even as Apple catches up with its rivals, it total cumulative R&D spending over the last 10 years will be lower for a long time. This gives its competitors a headstart in capturing patents and bringing new innovative products to the table first.

Peter thanks for your comment - I think it might be fair to say that when dealing with large numbers, the marginal rate of efficiency in spending declines. But then, doesn't that look at the numbers backwards? Would you rather have "30%" efficiency on a $1bn spend or 25% efficiency on a $2bn spend? The latter is 16% less effective but generates a greater total nonetheless. ($500mn vs $300mn).

Thanks for your comment Bgold - I don't quite follow though. Are you suggesting that Apple should be more like Exxon?

Unless they've named it after Rivendale Caravan Park

they've misspelt Rivendell - Elrond would be appalled.

  • Best Buy Microsoft Stores Q&A [View instapost]
Ewmpsi - Microsoft has improved a lot. Historically its adverts were terrible. The Windows 7 launch campaign in particular was utterly cringe worthy.
    Look at this: http://bit.ly/10YYD6f
and just remind yourself.. this realllllllly happened...
Samsung do deliver great campaigns, but they also have (probably) the biggest ad account in the world, that buys a lot of talent.

edit - just read my comment again, did not mean it sarcastically when i wrote "enjoyment" - i actually quoted it because i was thinking of the term "flow". Basically whenever I get in the mood of things, I actually just forget the passage of time and really enjoy what i'm doing, sportsmen get it a lot apparently. i get it with this sometimes!

Yes page views, but only on desktops. As far as i'm aware, mobile (definitely) and phone/pad app (maybe) page views are not counted

Seppo yes - but because he is a true financial analyst, he also writes on smaller cap stocks - if they are awarded "Small Cap Insight" - they receive $150 automatically. Alpha articles get awarded $500 and there are other small bonuses awarded to lesser known stocks also (if article quality is sufficient).
Because I write on big, well known and well covered stocks, I am not eligible for any of those rewards (that's fine). I enjoy writing about Nokia and other tech stocks because I simply understand them and their strategy more. Other people's "enjoyment" comes from writing about finance or other particular topics and themes, so i can see why they cover a much broader spectrum.

Thank you DC - That's kind of you. Yeah that person wrote a 500 word article which got through somehow.
WRS - Yes we're paid by pageviews. You can get an idea of how much by looking through here:

Redrut - Till Lumias come with VPN I don't see it succeeding in China. With VPN one can evade the great firewall of China and use facebook, google etc.

Sam - Just out of curiousity - Do you think that Nokia should even bother making a camera phone? I mean they did invent them and now they've done another major step change in camera phone technology with pureview. Are you denying that happened?

Randal - The zoom I think can best be compared to the 2 pictures I have at the end of the article. The first shows the full level of detail captured in a 38MP shot. The second is my zooming in and selecting one part of the photo.
As far as I'm aware, and i'm no expert in cameras, is that optical zooming has certain mechanical limitations which would make it very difficult to fit into a phone and maintain its slim profile.
