  • Apple's iPhone 5 Is Already Outselling Nokia's Lumia Windows Phones [View article]
css1971 - the page views on that article must be crazy. 2,500 comments, and 80% plus breaking in Lumia 920's favour.
If existing Lumia lines are selling 4 million per quarter at present, I'm going to go ahead and forceast from Nov1-2012 to Nov 1-2013, the Lumia range will sell 35million or above. Double the popularity seems easily achievable. Most techies knew Windows Phone 7 was just a stopgap, with WP8 - a lot are willing to give it a try.

Im serious A Rob - write an article, let's be honest, with the ahem, quality of the output in some quarters, the publishing standard is not that high. Just lay out the case so people understand what they are getting with Nokia. of course it's a speculative investment, but if you look at all the tech blogs, if you walk into a phone shop, any in the western world, everyone who knows about actual phones, are excited about the L920. Well, anyone that isn't an ardent Apple 'fanboy'. But, even most people who purchase Appl purchase on the presumption of quality. And to me, that quality image has been destroyed by the launch of the iphone 5. Poor mapping system. It scuffs as soon as you touch it against something (see the 140 page macrumours thread for proof). The buttons wobble. it rattles when its shaken. When the lights are switched off you can see gaps from the casing where lighting emanates from.. touchscreen issues..
there are masses of iphone 5 issues. each one of those would have DESTROYED Nokia's reputation!
Anyway I digress, you write it!

johnny - all those returned iphones! AAPL shareholders might be in for a shock when they discover share prices can go down as well as up. I actually think the biggest issue is the phone design quality... they're already breaking and scuffing like anything. in three months time one won't be able to see an undamaged iphone 5 not in a protective case - don't think that will do much for sales. Seeing friends carry phones has always been the best advertisement. I doubt many will see scuffed up iphones and jump at the chance to join the crowd.

Johnny - i've been following the macrumours thread also regarding scuffing issues. Out of the 35% reporting immediate scuffing at least half have returned phones to the shops and got returns. I doubt apple will be releasing the return rates on iphones but it is massive and will definitely be impacting the bottom line.

memtrading - that's a good point. WP8 is a relaunch. It's like in a way saying one didnt see any iphones in 2006. but you sure heard a lot of people getting excited. it's actually pretty similar to that..
on my part i've always had nokias, but i was pretty much forced to get another brand because Nokia phones were very dated compared to what was around the last time i got a new phone (2010).. and now finally, they're back. So there are a lot of folks who used to have Nokias who want them again.. and theres also a lot of folks excited about microsoft doing the most massive product launch in their history.. if you take two very large communities, and bring them together, there will be buzz.

  • Nokia (NOK) is reportedly hatching plans to sue HTC over the design of its Windows Phone 8X model, announced last week. "Nokia is preparing to get HTC 8X banned in various parts of the world from going on sale when it will launch in November," a source tells PC-Tablet.com. The 8X and 8S bear more than a slight resemblance to Nokia's Lumia 920 and 820, and they'll be running the same OS. [View news story]
I actually have a bit of a soft spot for HTC - Microsoft pretty much made them. (i.e. by giving them a massive contract to make the 'SPV' smartphone. Yes, a smartphone 5 years before Apple invented them from 2002)..
these new phones are also very beautiful and I hope they sell. I am long NOK, but what this ecosytem needs is 2-3 vendors giving it life and making it huge. I have a feeling HTC are very committed to WP8 - maybe even more than android now (i base this on their historical affiliation with Microsoft, and knowing senior people in Microsoft who have always over many years spoken warmly of them)
-- maybe there are some internal patent breaches - but i don't see how externally a copy could have been made? the WP8 Lumias have not even launched yet and the HTC phones would have been completed by sept5 when Nokia announced them. Maybe a case of corporate espionage??

a lot of the commentary on the verge reckon this is just wild speculation and rumour.
Furthermore, as far as I'm aware, if one actually holds both phones, they feel and look very different. much more than in photos - that's what people who have used both phones indicate anyway.

    -FreeChoice4All.

I agree. there is a meme that goes "Congratulations, You Won The Internet". That seems aprops in these hallowed confines also.

I think it's almost amusing that people think Apple will forever be the largest company in the world, the largest phone manufacturer in the world, and the largest technology manufacturer in the world..
    all things change..
and one thing is for certain. The largest company in the world yesterday will not be the largest company in the world tomorrow.
Those at the top, always become complacent, it is in their nature, and those hungry for success fight for it.. and they succeed.
This applies to all forms of history, be it economic, social or political..
and in this case, everyone is gunning for Apple. And someone will succeed. Who knows which company it will be, but in 10 years time, the technology landscape will have been transformed.

Juuso - i have now seen this video http://bit.ly/QO9xEi
Note the date - 6th September - Foxconn employee said back scratched easily. Could be a general quality control issue?
Check twitter #scuffgate - I'm still not convinced it's a big issue. But if it scratches easily, problem will quickly grow with time, only been out a few days.

EDIT: 1000 post thread on Macrumours - 40% report some scuffing.
    This could get bad.
    http://bit.ly/SnQCo3

    SECOND EDIT:
Rioting underway in Foxconn factory which makes backplate!???

Thank you Kherman - that's very insightful! Very much hell, but very important to learn.. loved that granularity point!

Owen - that's actually a very good idea. I have some basic accounting knowledge but will definitely pick up a corporate finance book and start practicing, thank you.

So-lucky - it's funny you mention design risk. I'm studying right now about the entrepreneurial propensity to take risk. Most of us know that XEROX was the top dog in the 1970s, it's technology division was legendary.. except, they were very poor at maintaining their innovative edge. Why? Because they had lawyers examining legal risk every step of the way. So a smart young company like Apple could come in, take a few ideas from Xerox and run with it. It's the difference between regulatory and promotion focus.. entrepreneurs see the upside, those with high opportunity cost can see too much downside!
Sorry for the ramble, what i'm trying to say is, Apple may have reached that stage where it is no longer behaving like the scrappy upstart. they are perpetually worried about losing market share. Hence the very conservative evolution of their phones so it is at least 12-18 months behind other comparable phones in most feautures (except CPU which is very advanced).
This paper is very interesting on it if you have access to academic databases.

Reports are coming in of the iPhone 5 scratching easily.
    http://bit.ly/Q9Nday
I wonder if this is just sensationalism or may become a serious problem for AAPL over the coming weeks. It's very well telling people that your phone is like a Rolex, but Rolexes don't scratch in under a week!

Owen - Skwe - could you guys kindly please tell me how you figured out such knowledge? Not with ABFS in particular but that financial knowledge. Books? Studying the income statement very carefully? I want to get better at reading financial statements. it is a very important skill to have!
    Thanks.
