  • Will QNX Be The Savior Of BlackBerry? [View article]
For Blackberry to be a reasonable investment even at these low levels it has to stabilize its business. I just don't see this happening at the moment, so many carriers are dropping/not supporting Blackberries, so the news continues to get worse.

  • Why $600 Will Soon Be In Apple's Rearview Mirror [View article]
A new revolutionary iphone next year is buying into Apple hype. It may be bigger, faster etc but hardly revolutionary.

Your overall thesis that 2014 is a year of new product cycles is reasonable.

  • Microsoft May Surprise To The Upside This Quarter [View article]
Most people don't have much patience, RT was written off way too early, it is a far superior product now.
I just found a great new feature yesterday, in the address bar there is an open book symbol which turns pages, that support it, into a reading view -- it's a great way to read SA articles.

  • Apple Would-Be Shorts: Bide Your Time, Apple's Run Will Be Over Soon Enough [View article]
Shorting is risky at the best of times and while I'm not a huge fan of Apple products there is no denying that the Apple brand is an 800 pound gorilla, do you really want to take on a Gorilla?

From personal experience I've heard of a lot of people asking for iPads for Christmas, more than any time I can remember. These are the type of people who aren't techies, they've just heard that it's the thing to have, and they want it. I could argue that another tablet may offer better value or have more functionality but no they want the iPad, and you can't argue with that.

Instagram is currently the 10th most popular mobile app in the US so they obviously spotted something the first time around.

Good points cashawash. Once you start getting to that number of users which is close to half the planet it stands to reason that a lot of them will be very poor and not very profitable. If you keep an eye on the monthly active users it is not moving up that fast and it would take a long long time to get anywhere near 3 billion active users.

It is simpler to look at new ways to make more money from existing users, a billion customers is nothing to sneeze at.

These prices do seem crazy for small companies, although in hindsight Instagram was a good purchase. We don't know exactly what the terms offered for snapchat were. I haven't seen any confirmation from Facebook about the specific details of this offer.

Not sure, it has been shown that per user advertising is highest in the western markets and the per user value is lower in the developing markets, additional growth outside of the west won't provide a linear increase in profits.

I'm not certain, the stock price is swinging around so it can change from week to week. My main contention is that I'm not sure if the advertising model alone is enough to support the stock price.
It has all these users and it's building deeper and deeper relationships by becoming the de facto place for a lot of people's social lives, so can it figure out additional ways to make money from these users?
If not the flip side if this doesn't happen is how much can it grow the advertising model? It's unlikely to reach Google like levels just because the advertising is not why you're on the site.

I suppose you mean the next earnings report to beat analysts estimates? :) This is not a given because they will up their numbers based on this current strong beat. The beat the numbers game is a bit of a distraction.

Thanks, I've been more focused on what they have been achieving which has been very positive, growth and monetization are both on an upward trajectory.
