Very interesting way to look at it, Tom. I have seen them that way for some time - high margins, high barriers to entry. I have followed the sector for years and watch MCHP most closely and, more recently, POWI (a very cool company with some great markets). The one thing that has bothered me about some of the companies is the leverage that they have put on the balance sheet. Why did your model not include debt-per-share as a variable?

MJNA came out with another press release this week, the most lame of all. They signed a deal with a "prominent" (but unnamed) deal to market 20 hemp products. Talk about diluting what the investors want to see here, as they are becoming a hemp marketing company. At least their current products are "medical" and unique - the CBD gum, Dixie Botanicals and the RSHO. Now it will be hand creams and shampoo apparently...

The $5 reference comes from the company directly (CEO on call - see transcript) and is net of the debt. I spoke with the CFO to clarify, and this is inclusive of tax - there was very little tax involved apparently. With that said, I think it might be more accurate to say that the $5 is an end-of-year number.

I had seen that - wish that they would have said why they think Llamas is the unnamed partner in Roen, though it makes a lot of sense.

When they did that deal, they probably had different plans, but the market didn't allow MJNA to sell stock. The ability to book revenue and to sell stock was probably enough to get MJNA to do a bad deal. Bad, because they have no control - only thing that they have done without control. Of course, Llamas is the one who was likely on the other side - he is supposedly a partner with Mona in "Roen Ventures". Mona did the deal with no pay to him and no ownership - today's disclosure of a salary now and 500K options is his second involvement. First was lending the company money.

Today, it became very clear - he has the option to convert the debt (which just jumped up over 4X) into stock. If my suspicions are correct, the MJNA stake (which will be no more than 6.9mm shares - not a majority) could get reduced pretty dramatically, depending on where the "valuation" for the options (500K) and the convertible note conversion price ends up. Ultimately, we could see CANV try to buy MJNA back at some very low price (to get its shares back)...

I have seen this crap in listed stocks - I imagine in penny-land it's even easier to pull this off... Just a theory...

Yes, good "detective" work! It will be VERY INTERESTING to see where his options and the note conversion price are set. There is such a wide range of possibilities, from $.05 cost for more than half the shares (the original 7mm) to the 4.50-6.00 collar area for the deal to the current "market price" of $14. My guess is that any time of valuation analysis will be at $1 or less, as I have been arguing. The stock is so thin that the market prices don't reflect reality. There is no cash flow here - their auditor is likely to raise some questions about the ability of the company to be a going concern in my view.

CANV released some very interesting news that I think is bad for MJNA in two ways. First, I think that their business was likely weak in Q2, as they apparently didn't order (or pay for) more CBD oil. Second, their position as a minority investor in CANV just deteriorated. Here are the details: http://seekingalpha.co...

  • Team Alpha Portfolio: Selling A Stock When Serious Questions Arise [View article]
    >>> realistically how can the amateur compete with the pros?<<<

It takes a lot of work, but it's quite possible for non-pros to do as well if not better than pros. The pros main advantage isn't the things you say, it's the focus and amount of time that they put into it. Just being real smart and a pro with every available tool at your disposal is no lottery ticket. Look at how many pros stumble badly - Ackman on JCP, for instance. The individual investor has the advantage of being small and nimble and not having to answer to anyone but himself.

But, yes, index funds may be a best bet for many, especially on average...

MJNA reported today that the three directors from CanChew Biotech, the subsidiary that is a JV between MJNA and Sanammad, have been given formal executive titles (CEO, CMO and CTO). The real news is that they are launching clinical trials, expected to last 3 years, in order to file for a CBD/THC gum with the FDA and with the European regulator. Importantly, there was no detail about how they would fund this new project. I think that the CBD gum sales stink, and MJNA and the guys from Sanammad wanted to make sure that everyone knew that they are still on board. I think the product, if approved, would be huge, but it's not clear how they will pay for it given weak cash flow, minimal cash, no credit, a tapped out share-count relative to the authorized shares and no trading in CANV. They did discuss in the press release the potential for licensing - this would solve that problem. Here is press release:

  • After Tripling, Big 5 Sporting Goods Is Due For A Pause [View article]
The company just laid an egg. I wrote this about a week too early!

Sales in Q2 were 1% shy of the consensus, though EPS exceeded. The real issue is that the guidance for Q3 was light, with same-store sales seen increasing "low single-digit" and EPS of .40-.45 compared to a .45 consensus (and impacted by .02 related to e-commerce spending).
