• Own Gold? Time to Fold [View article]
I think you're right about pawn shops and crime. Everything else looks pretty bleak.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Dow Chemical Co said on Monday it would close 20 facilities, divest several businesses and trim about 11 percent of its jobs.

P.S. - investors don't buy or hock bullion at pawn shops.

• Ivanhoe Mines is a Bargain, But... [View article]
Nice 50-cent bounce overnight to $2.49 on Australian news. Might move higher in New York on optimism for a deal in Mongolia.

Sounds nuts, but I'm going to sit on the sidelines. I truly wish this company success on the abundant merit of their management and scientific staff, but I would like to see a signed agreement in Mongolia and a bump in copper. February? January?

• Is It Time to Buy Gold? [View article]
The more I dig into this, the less I like it. Q1 launched in February, hosted on GoDaddy. No info on who, if anybody, they "advise." Andrew's current post says he can make money in gold mining stocks, but he's not a trader.

What the heck?

I agree with Prognostic about event risk. That's my reason for keeping some gold and silver coin, in case I need to barter in an emergency. The financial crisis of 2008 could be interpreted as a crash, not unlike 1929. If true, that means a long grind down, before equities bottom. 1933 was the best opportunity to buy common stocks. I think it makes sense to stay in cash until and unless there is a slow, steady, sustained recovery.

Finally, I'm concerned about bank failures. It may be unrealistic to assume that all bank deposits, bonds, commercial paper, swaps, annuities and pensions can be guaranteed by government.

• $25 Oil Could Happen Before a Return to $100 [View article]
"...so I'm guessing we are getting close to the point where stocks will turn the corner... The truth is, I have no idea where oil prices are headed."

I'll take your 2-to-1 wager. At $25 a barrel, all of the unconventional, most of the US onshore, and half of the Gulf Coast gets shut in. Equilibrium is ~$50 on reduced demand in China.

Buy low, sell high? What happened to your Oct. 29 guidance?
"Have enough cash on hand to live for the next year or two.
Buy safe stocks cautiously."

And remind me, the safe stocks are what?

Hope they are right ?? -- more borrowing, spending, monetizing and devaluation, therefore destruction of savings is right ??

Out again at $2.27. I think we need a signed deal with Mongolian govt for IVN to rally. My other concern is Rio Tinto and copper price.

• Ivanhoe Mines is a Bargain, But... [View article]
Dow Jones reported that Oyu Tolgoi, copper-gold joint venture between Ivanhoe Mines, Ltd. and Rio Tinto Limited in Mongolia, has cut about 250 jobs, representing around 40% of its staff because of the global financial crisis and collapse in metal prices.

Re PBR (via Dow Jones this morning):

"I want to vehemently deny the insinuations that we are in a financial crisis. What is important to make clear is that Petrobras is not in any cash-flow crisis," CEO Gabrielli said.

Oh good. Always positive when something is vehemently denied.

Lora, maybe so. I watched it climb a notch, said ho-hum. But a funny thing happened this morning. Ivanhoe slid less than GLD. Decided to buy again at $2.22.
