  • Rethinking the Baltic Dry Index [View article]
Your choice of March 9th to begin the evaluation of BDI as a leading indicator is both curious and misleading. The BDI bottomed during late 2008 and January of 2009 as worldwide stock markets (led by China) were bottoming. Its powerful surge in February was a very useful lead indicator. The BDI has an excellent record of leading at key turning points. Other than those key turning points, BDI is not especially useful. Its recent weakness seems to be caused by a temporary lull in Chinese imports along with an increase in the number of ships competing for business.
