  • Todd Sullivan is shorting Salesforce.com (CRM +2.5%), convinced it's the next Netflix or Green Mountain Coffee. His main concerns: the company loses money on a GAAP basis, insiders are selling heavily, and the stock is too richly priced. Most commentary on CRM ahead of its upcoming FQ3 report has been bullish (I, II).  [View news story]

    lets be fair, both NFLX and GMCR had their accounting issues, NFLX with their "off balance sheet" content obligations and GMCR being investigated by the SEC for accounting irregulations. I'd bet most buyers of CRM have no idea about the GAAP vs non GAAP discrepancies. also remember all the major research firms all had outperform ratings on both NFLX and GMCR before they imploded, so can these firms be fooled? the answer is yes. you have provided very little information why the CRM should remain at these multiples yet criticized the author for his research and opinion. why are you a CRM believer? Indulge us.

    Paulo!

    what is your response to Citis upgrade today

    Our change in opinion is based on our belief there are appear to be an increasing number of ways the company can drive long-term cash flow growth that are above consensus expectations. We detail these four drivers below:

    1) Margin structure that drives natural margin expansion of 200-250 bps per year;

    2) Billings upside from investments in growth;

    3) Guidance that has significant ability to move higher in FY13 (initial guide expected Thursday on the October results call); and

    4) Option value on early markets (Marketing Cloud, Force.com) as we are increasingly confident in chances of success here.

    im sure everyone would love to hear your thoughts

    well if the company wasnt spending 50% of revenue on marketing they would have better EPS. when has a large cap company ever spent 50% of revenue and been successful? oh and lets not forget most of the advertising pumps the stock and targets investors rather than a product and a customer.
