  • No Progress From Amazon In 2013 [View article]
    >I will continue to inform people how to make money on great stocks like Amazon<
Serious question, do you have recommendations for the best 5 stocks to own over the next 12 months? And is AMZN a buy or sell in your book for the same twelve month period?

  • Latest Quarterly Miss Only Reinforces The Fact That Amazon Is Wildly Overvalued [View article]
When someone points out that a stock should be valued at 97% less than its current price based on peer multiples, you can hardly call that Monday morning quarterbacking. And waiting for a break in the momentum is smart trading. (Indeed I wish I'd waited, though in the end I think my short position will pay off well).
In any case thanks to the author for a well written and well thought out article.

Why are "bullish" and "objective" distinct categories? I would think the goal of investing is to arrive at objective bullish or bearish conclusions...

Re the SEC, is that just your speculation or do you have a link suggesting it's true/imminent? TIA.

Also, for those who might have missed it, I did a follow-on article looking at the question "should AMZN be valued as a disruptive tech firm?" http://seekingalpha.co...

That's a great question krk, one that will take more than a paragraph to (try to) answer. I'll do my best to write up my thoughts sometime this weekend. (My thoughts will be speculative, I don't pretend to have a definitive answer.)

Yeah, there are countervailing aspects to it. OTOH it puts brick and mortars on a more level playing field (a negative for AMZN), OTOH AMZN already has the infrastructure to handle sales tax calculations for each state, while many of its smaller online competitors don't (a positive for AMZN). I tend to think the psychological aspect of shoppers not thinking they're getting a sales tax deal by shopping at AMZN makes it a net negative, but you may well be right that it's immaterial in the end.

There are many other threats to AMZN, including MFA. But here I was just trying to show that the idea of it being a misunderstood "disruptor" is not an argument that should entice people to buy the stock.

I should probably elaborate by saying that for various reasons my near term outlook for the markets in general is bearish, so I'm not looking to take on new longs; indeed over the past four months I've significantly pared down my long holdings. So far I've been wrong on that, but I'm hoping it's more a case of being early than of being completely wrong ;-)

Yes, I agree and I do think AMZN should be compared to retailers, not given its own "disruptive tech company" category. But since that's a familiar argument I thought I should address it. And in case you haven't seen it, Paulo Santos has a nice comparison between AMZN and WMT making some of the points you make: http://seekingalpha.co...

(I should note that I had written this prior to Paulo's article coming out, but in my newness here at SA I didn't realize you can't publish two articles in a row on the same company. In fact I had actually thought of following this up with a similar comparison to WMT and COST but I don't think that would add as much value anymore. )
