  • Berkshire's Downgrade: Rating Agencies Become More Irrelevant [View article]
Berkshire and General Electric (GE) now have the same credit rating from Moody's when Berkshire has roughly 10 times GE's tangible book value. As Whitney said, the inconsistency "underscores why no sane investor should pay any attention to the credit rating agencies."

  • The Amazing Growing Mortgage Relief Plan [View article]
Far too many incentives for lenders and rather than incentivize them to help home owners, they may get greedy chasing incentive bonuses.

  • Tim Geithner vs. The American Banking Elite [View article]
Blame. Blame. Blame. There are many parties and reasons for the current economic downturn. It's not what happened that matters, but how we get out of the current mess and ensure we have the right controls in place to avoid repeating the same mistakes in the future.

  • The End of Gold, Part Two [View article]
Some good analysis here. But looking at the longer picture based on some analysis I wrote about, I think Gold may have more going for it than not. Deflation and slow growth may be short term issues, but as the stimulus kicks in and an economic recovery starts. gold could become a big hedge against the subsequent inflationary pressures.

  • Apple and Google: Changing My Mind [View article]
I bought Google at $700 and Apple at $186. Unfortunately I bought just before they crashed (live and learn), but I believe in the long term outlook for the best 2 tech companies. Still holding on and perhaps get some more.

  • Buying Up BofA: Booyah! [View article]
Great article. I like BAC, but to avoid single company risk, prefer the UYG trade for short term gains. (I recently wrote about this trade here at SA). In regards to the bailouts, I am not too happy about them, but do feel that they were necessary to keep the integrity of the financial system intact. Just look at the ripple effects of Lehmann Bro's going under.

  • Banking on a Rally for Quick Profits  [View article]
User 290548 - I bought the stock yesterday @ 2.90 (this article was published a day later here at SA). So I am up for now.

outtamojo - $2000, may not be big money for you, but it is a lot for some. Like I said, this is a risky/spec opportunity so did not want too put too much capital at risk. If I get a double on the stock, I will be happy to walk away with $2K. I have done this trade about 3 times before and overall am up 8K on it. Not bad with 2K at risk....

  • Best and Worst Performing Stocks Seven Months Into 2008 [View article]
It will be intersting to see how these finished up. I looked at the various indexes and there was a minor end of year rally, but only one stockmarket (Tunisia) finished in positive territory for the year!

  • My Top 10 Market Predictions for 2009 [View article]
Some strong predictions here. Here's where I have a different viewpoint. I don't China's growth will slow to 2% (more like 6%) and civil unrest is unlikely as the government will keep spending its vast cash reserves. I also think the Obama administration will be more active than you have suggested.

Things have just gotten worse as 2008 comes to an end. Despite a december bounce, we will finish at record lows all over the world.

  • When Will the Recession End? [View article]
Great post and the analysis you had is excellent. Despite the recession dragging on and hitting tech espically hard, it is good to see another optimistic viewpoint (relatively speaking). I think the recession will be over as fast as it started, though the structural changes will last for much longer. Now is the time to make the best of the opportunities available.

  • Buy, Sell or Hold: GM's Too-Big-to-Fail Myth [View article]
Good analysis. But before discarding the "too-big-too-fail" theory, look a the pros and cons as I did in a recent article. We need to be thinking short term and long term of out nations infrastructure. Once the car industry is gone, it will be gone forever.

  • Is Buy-and-Hold Dead? Hardly [View article]
Jeff Macke is a CNBC grouch who makes inflamatory statements to attract viewers. He is happy to say one thing and trade the opposite. Buy and hold may look bad now, but less look at the things in context of a few years and then decide.

  • Share Buybacks Make Apple Sweeter [View article]
I 100% agree with you when it comes to Apple. It is going to have a massive year end rally and that’s why I am buying call options on Apple, which is basically now the leader in tech. Where Apple goes, the rest follow.
