  • 10 New Dividend Aristocrats For Retirement Accounts [View article]
CenturyLink (CTL) did not increase the dividend last year, so it was dropped. The only Dividend Aristocrat at risk now is Abbott (http://bit.ly/mOs35Y) because it's splitting into 2 companies which could affect its streak.

REITs pay dividends from FFO, loosely cash flow, which is greater than EPS. Somewhat related, it is common some of the dividend is not taxed (or taxed at a lower rate). Last year HCP said 48% was considered ordinary dividends. The number changes every year.

    Larry,

Look at the chart. It's had a drab decade, especially in recent years. But it started from a low base in 2011 & beat the S&P 500 by a wide margin.

In a taxable account, capital gains taxes are paid when the stock is sold which could be many years in the future.

I hold REITs in both. The tax advantage portion varies from one year to the next. What counts are dividends and capital appreciation.

Check their website for more info:

Each share of stock is backed by 1 unit of the partnership. The distribution paid to units generates the size of a stock dividend. SInce every stockholder gets the dividend, the share of the total remains the same. Growth comes from more shares at (hopefully) higher prices. Don't ask about the discount when EEQ sells at a premium to its unit price. Who knows?

When shares are held in a personal, 1099s are not sent. Good luck,

  • Invest In MLP Shares Of Enbridge And Kinder Morgan For A Double In 10 Years [View article]
    Chancer,

There's no way to know what new moves Kinder Morgan will make. But they would have to make a tender for the shares to close it out & that would reduce equity. Merging it with a partnership does not seem like an option. KMR is financing for their business & I think they are happy with it.

    Chris,

I'm a long time fan of KMB, having mentioned it numerous times in my articles on Dividend Aristocrats with high yields. In today's low interest rate environment, a yield over 4% and growing dividends makes for an attractive investment.

    36buyandholder,

    Good Catch!!

I got my numbers from Yahoo Finance, but made a mistake on EPS for MKC. Below is a quote from their current earnings statement:

For fiscal year 2011, McCormick reaffirms its goal to achieve earnings per share of $2.80 to $2.85.

That's inline with analysts & they're forecasting $3.09 next year. Obviously, lower EPS raises the P/E to about 17X. Sorry about the mistake, but they remain a Dividend Aristocrat which will have to deal with rising food prices.

Separately, CLX had a very bad day yesterday. It's having a tough time with commodity prices as is the competition. Management is rated as good & Carl Icahn has taken a big stake.
