CPI Corp's Dividend Yield Is Too Good To Be True [View article]
Oliver - I'm sorry to hear about the loss. I am working/traveling and will not have a chance to read over the earnings report until this weekend so I have no new commentary at this point. Apologies, I know this is time sensitive. Best of luck!

Value Investor - thank you for your commentary. I should have been more clear with the purpose of my article. CPY came across my screen as I was looking for dividend yield. I saw that there appeared to be some major warning signs - particularly at this point the continued ability to pay future dividends. I have read the 10-K as well as other available company presentations and reports - I always do so before writing an article. I instead chose to focus my article on the simple fact that CPY was paying a tremendous dividend and would likely not have cash available to continue to pay it. I rushed publication to alert (i.e., "Tread carefully") investors before the earnings release today. The stock is down nearly 60% as I write this and a reader has pointed out below that CPY has suspended dividends and stock buybacks.
Again, thank you for your feedback. I hope this does not mean you were in CPY today - if so best of luck with the stock, I hope it turns around.

Sorry Al! Assuming no intervening event, I agree $9 would likely be an excellent entry point. Who knows what kind of volatility we will see in this market (especially with small caps)? I would not expect it to get there, however. VASC actually seems to be pretty well followed by money managers in Minnesota; that type of discount would likely attract sizable investment. Also, management repurchased 94,974 shares at $1,042,000 in Q1 (doing the math, average of $10.97/share) and spent $2,108,000 to repurchase shares at an average $10.96/share in Q2. With $17.8 million in cash on the balance sheet, I would expect management to make large repurchases leading down to $9 even if that means going back to the board. In the past I have got the sense from management that it will take advantage of any discounts it perceives in the share price. Long story short, there might be several factors propping up the stock price. Then again, I am long the stock so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
