  • Samsung Smart TVs to run Tizen [View news story]
Might as well use it for something. Probably won't be in very many phones going forward.

  • Analysis: Apple Christmas Sales [View article]
I'd say that of the two, Microsoft Mobile's in a better position to monetize its money loser entry phones. Microsoft runs its app store and Cortana helps drive Bing results, whereas Samsung only gets a smallish percentage of Google's revenue derived from Galaxy phones and its own apps are ignored by many users (I saw an estimate that the average Galaxy user is in a Samsung app about 4 minutes a month).

  • Analysis: Apple Christmas Sales [View article]
Only correction: you say that the data only shows December 25. However, according to other sources, it shows the week from the 19th to the 26th. Same overall difference, though.

Definitely interesting for the people who see Apple getting completely drowned out by Android. Makes me wonder what caused this, since this is radically different from most stats, which show iOS devices increasing in total numbers, but decreasing as total market share. Possibilities:

    1) People giving Christmas/holiday gifts are more likely to give out an Apple device due to popularity and perceived value. It's very possible that the more typical 20/80 ratio of iPhone to Android could be restored once people are buying for themselves again.
    2) People activating Android phones during this period were less likely to install the selected apps on them, thus hiding them from the statistics by this organization. For instance, I doubt that the cheapo Android phones I see for sale off contract at Safeway have the necessary hardware to run many apps very well.
    3) Larger iPhones have lured back users who had defected to Android devices.
    4) The statistics come up with by this group are faulty in some way.
    5) Reviews of the Samsung S5 have been somewhat lukewarm. Since the cell phone market operates as an Apple/Samsung duopoly in the United States, a lackluster Samsung phone would make the Apple phone the natural replacement.

I'd be interested to see what these same statistics would show this time next month.

  • Russia hikes interest rate to 17% in attempt to halt ruble's plunge [View news story]
Assuming they don't default. And assuming those rubles are worth anything in four years.

High interest rates exist for a reason.

As an MSFT shareholder, this makes me glad they've ignored the call to abandon Xbox and other consumer focused items to do nothing but enterprise.

I'm curious what North Korea would want with this data. Unless it's a test run for runs on government systems.

  • Microsoft's Black Friday Win With Xbox One A Piece Of Welcome News [View article]
Plus Xbox Live Gold. Plus the fact that it gets Microsoft's brand into places where it might not be otherwise.

(Example: I used to work at a store that sold X-Boxes. I remember the day the iPhone 5S launched, and the people came across the street with said new phones to check out the preview of the X-Box One and seemed legitimately excited).

  • XBox One Sales Boost A Catalyst For AMD [View article]
So if they sold, say, 3 million, we're looking at less than 50 million GROSS REVENUE? Before paying the foundry?

Yikes. I hope that's not true, or else that's a terrible deal for AMD.

Is this really surprise? Every indication I read was that the huge tax hike killed retail sales.

  • Groupon Is In The Early Stages Of A Multi-Year Growth Phase [View article]
Lesson learned: every single company is vulnerable to people nipping at their heels. I think Google and Microsoft is a war that is going to be written about for decades to come, just because it's the ultimate match of cool and popular with the customers vs implacable and popular with enterprise. It's just fascinating to watch.

(As an investor, Microsoft treats shareholders better, but that won't decide the war).
