  • What Does Google Need For Mobile? [View article]
Complaining that Google needs to know who you are is like complaining that your bank knows how much money you have. That's how it works. And there's no evidence that consumers care about this in ways that would be a problem for Google.

That is, there is a very small segment of the population that deliberately avoids Google, just as there is one that avoids Apple. But that's not remotely a mass-market issue, nor a problem for either company.

That tells us something about you, but doesn't have anything to do with the post.

  • In Mobile, Disruption Comes From Above [View article]
I didn't mention Google, wasn't thinking about the various wifi and MVNO stories, and don't think they are remotely credible as a path to disruption. But advertising has nothing to do with it.

Not remotely. People understand, but reach a different conclusion. They don't care.

  • Where Do Mobile Numbers Come From? [View article]
There are lots and lots of sampling tools of varying reliability. One can look at Kantar Adsense, Facebook, comscore, GFK... they're all problematic in different ways. The deeper point - none of them are primary sources. Everything is an estimate of some sort.

Even if the failure rate you're citing is accurate, that is not a particularly useful input to an active base number.

Many, and probably most such devices are replaced or repaired, for free or for a fee depending on the cause. Those replacements are not counted in Apple's unit sales numbers, and obviously repairs cannot be. Without knowing that proportion the Square Trade numbers (even if it's a representative sample) are useless.

Actually, on the original iPhone even Apple's own apps did not multitask.

Analysis means trying to work out what's going on. That, amongst other things, means asking questions that may be unanswerable.

That was the only assertion of fact as opposed to opinion.

It really ought to be self-evident that anyone reading this is outside the suggested use case.

Smartphones will rise to perhaps 90% of the population. It's quite wrong to assume that they're only owned by professionals

Quite possibly. However that has nothing, at all, to do with this post

If many people use no services except for web search, or use them very infrequently, that bears very strongly on Android, and on all of the data collection projects

I read my piece again and I can't find any mention of a stalk of grass. Can you point it out to me?
