Wow - great thoughts there. If AMC, PBS etc. go that route there is bound to be some backlash from cable. But it could very well be that they assess the opportunity cost of the different scenarios and pick they choice they think gives them the best chance at future revenue growth. I read this morning that YouTube is getting ready to launch paid channels as well.

Putster -Do you think Netflix will be able to hold their prices at same levels? If they decide to go the route of original content will their costs have to go up to replace the content they are letting go? Will consumers have to chose as they become more distinct? This sector is the superbowl of strategic games and I love it

  • Is Google Worth That Much More Than Microsoft? [View article]
derf nenhob - I actually mentioned the royalty payments in the article. "Microsoft may make more direct royalty money from hardware manufacturers that produce Android devices but it is myopic to think Android is not beneficial to Google".
I am not in the camp calling for Ballmer's head - sometimes the grass is not always greener on the other side as was evident with Apple.

George: Thanks for reading. I bought Microsoft less than a year ago so it has been good to me. It is facing some serious headwinds but the risk profile is good enough for me. I think Windows Blue will be a great catalyst if they get it right and they have history on their side with revisions.

don'tbugeplease: I like your "name". Should Microsoft not have any fear of Google?

Absolutely - they have done very well. I read about the deals but expected that the rise would be gradual until the build out of the new stores started. I am glad I got in early.

Keeshen - my consternation with the first mover advantage in this space is that there are no switching costs built in. You can go from Netflix to Prime to whatever else will come up tomorrow without dropping a dime. Amazon is rumored to be working on a set top box - that changes the argument a little bit.

Sakelaris - I do believe that there will always be subscribers to the DVD business just like AOL still has dialup customers today. But, I concur with your observation that at some point it becomes too small for the company to hedge any bets on it.

Thanks Mike - now I wish I could feel the same way about a lot of companies and be equally right. PZZI is way ahead of where I thought they would be

PJ - don't mess with my ego, if I were not thinking it I would not write about it.

We disagree on pricing and some metrics used but I respect your passion for your position. First mover advantage dies off once the market becomes adequately fragmented since content and not streaming ability is the real point of differentiation.

Thanks for reading - looking into gross margins across many manufacturers might tell an interesting story. If I get a chance to work on it I will let you know.

Jacob - solid point. I believe the fundamental issues for Nokia are selling down (price) and momentum. Samsung has an edge on both and is picking up speed.
