Well it is fake, because it is not real.

If it wasn't allowed, companies wouldn't be reporting non-GAAP results.

But in the end, the filings are all GAAP. For BlackBerry, that means a true loss.

The SEC doesn't allow it when it comes to actual financials. That's why all of the filings are in GAAP results.

Companies just use non-GAAP to make things look better than they are.

He also said on the prior call that BlackBerry was near the bottom for revenues. I don't consider a double digit decline near the bottom.

Please tell me when he said that revenues would fall off a cliff or that phone sales would be pushed into Q4, before the earnings conference call.

When the company issues blanket statements using vague words, it can be hard to model things. Give a number, not so much. Even the best researchers still didn't see this coming, because the company didn't give any idea that a huge revenue shortfall was coming.

It's possible, although it is also possible that the company chose to fulfill orders to more developed markets first, as higher prices can usually be garnered there. If I can get $500 for a phone in the US but only say $450 from the phone in India, why would I sell to India first? Just a thought.

I understand that, but just don't say that on the call when you're reporting revenues that are missing by such huge amounts.

If the company were producing solid quarters and beating by wide margins, those quotes seem fine. But when revenues are plunging and you are missing falling estimates by miles, it seems rather foolish.

Apple, Intel, many others do not use non-GAAP.

It's funny how the only ones that use non-GAAP are the ones that are trying to make poor results look better (social media, Google, BlackBerry, etc.)

Yes, it is a fake profit. Look at the actual financial statement, and they lost a chunk of money.

It's like saying, if I eliminate all of my losing trades, my non-GAAP profit percentage is 100%.

It's not a misleading comment, as the penny profit in itself is actually misleading.

"Everyone knows the difference in size between BBRY and AAPL".

I'm not quite sure about that, given the comments I usually see on my BBRY articles. The fanboys make it seem like this company is a powerhouse.

That's why I put the comparison in, to spread a dose of reality.

No, he didn't say that revenues would fall off a cliff in Q3. He also didn't give guidance for less than $800 million.

If you turn down deals, those potential buyers will go elsewhere. They won't necessarily come back to you later.

Again, when revenues are down 80% plus, you shouldn't be bragging about turning down potential customers.

Actually, those that have positions don't necessarily treat research as seriously, because it potentially clouds their judgement. Look at how Michael Blair continues to forecast pie in the sky numbers for the company since he is long.

So a fake profit is important, but a revenue miss the size of the grand canyon is not?

Well everyone has been hyping the Passport and it seems that sales have not been that great overall.

The problem is that analysts have been cutting estimates for months and BlackBerry still cannot meet them.
