  • Myths Of Apple's iPhone Market Share [View article]
Ponder this - Samsung smartphone profits are up and profits are down. That's the problem of an overbalanced focus on marketshare.

Also, iPhone sales are up - they are not growing as quickly as the rest of the market - which is being fueled by sub $99 smartphones in emerging markets. That is not the market in which iPhone competes.

Finally, the iPhone remains the aspirational brand in emerging markets - as a result Apple continues to "skim" the high margin sales across markets.

  • I Justify My Tesla Purchase With This Analogy [View article]
A point that isn't considered in the article: Apple goes to market with innovative, high margin products. Also, production can be ramped quickly to meet demand. Tesla cars, while innovative, have thin margins and production ramps may be a long term bottle neck.

Like many others, I'm rooting for Tesla, but to me - the valuation makes the investment too risky.

For the record, I bought Apple at $20 and I continue to hold.

  • Apple iOS 7: Hey Android, Copy This! [View article]
    @dogglecool,

They sold 200 million phones and lost money based (ttm eps).

The market is only impressed if you sell 200 m phones while making a profit.

Focusing on a niche, like the camera, may be a way to work their way back into the smartphone race, but they have ALOT of catching up to do.

"Seems like it would be pretty easy", maybe, but it is not:

iOS 7 requires significant software and hardware horsepower, including a powerful GPU and advanced, finely tuned, fully hardware accelerated graphics, the incorporation of a fully functioning physics engine and animation APIs.

The majority of Samsung (and Android's) smartphones are mid to low priced hardware running dated hardware/software.

  • Apple Inc.'s Slumping Unit Profits Spell Trouble [View article]
Here's another thought - the lower unit profit indicate the potential for mid-tier products iPad mini, iPhone 4. If Apple is able to get margins in line (example, move to plastic case for anticipated iPhone "Lite").

My opinion - without factoring in revenues, mix and margins into this analysis it's really tough to come to a conclusion. Bill

Maxx - thanks for the post, but I disagree. I think a better analogy is the difference between TV and HD TV - same content but significantly different user experience.

Earl, congrats on the Lumina, however, if you are going to post, I've noticed that it adds more value to the discussion if you managed to provide some input on the article.

You appear to be in the minority...

From Satjot Sawhney, the co-founder and CEO of TapFame, a community of talent behind almost 15,000 mobile apps. Sawhney sent a survey out to 1,000 iOS Developers on TapFame yesterday and received 223 responses.

78% of respondents described themselves as “Very Excited” with the new design of iOS 7.

JavaScript and HTML cannot currently render iOS 7 like effects. As a result web developers may face considerable pressure to create native iOS 7 apps.

iOS developers will face the prospect of having to compete against new iOS apps that take full advantage of the iOS 7 SDK, or updating their current iOS apps. With 775,000+ apps running iOS, that could consume a significant chunk of developer resources at the expense of Android, BlackBerry 10 and Windows 8.

The TV analogy was concerning the experience - also, hardware is a huge part of iOS 7. OEM's have demonstrated 3D-ish experiences, but no OEM has developed a dynamic OS.
