The U.S. and Canadian major oil companies will be drowning in crude oil by the end of this year if they keep operating at their current rates. They are already swimming in crude oil and finished products inventories with refineries running at an acceptable economic level of efficiency.   U.S. and Canadian oil refineries will be reducing overall inventories between now and the end of the year for Last In/First Out (LIFO) accounting purposes.

As of late crude oil trading has been a virtual skating rink, where every 15 minutes the announcer comes on and says to reverse direction. On the other hand gasoline refining is like NASCAR racing with speeding cars going around the track as fast as they can.

  • Gasoline and diesel fuel prices are scaring us in time for Halloween
Don’t be scared when you look at the prices you are paying at the pump right now for gasoline and diesel. This winter fuel prices both gasoline and diesel will reach the same low price levels as last year.

In Montana and in the rest of the U.S., we are now already paying about 45 cents per gallon less for fuel than we did last year. Gasoline in Montana is currently averaging $2.59 with the price last year at $3.04 per gallon.

  • Get ready for a drop in diesel and gasoline prices
    September 20, 2009 5:30 PM MDT

You will soon be paying under $2 per gallon again for gasoline and diesel fuel and crude oil will go back down into the 40's. So you can make plans for that trip to see the grandparents for the holidays as well as give the economy a much needed boost. Demand for gasoline in the United States typically falls after Labor Day due to vacation season ending. For the week ending September 4, 2009 demand for gasoline was at its lowest point since January 9, 2008 according to MasterCard Advisors LLC.

Currently diesel fuel is cheaper than gasoline in Canada and vice versa in the US. Canadian truckers, who were paying $1.45 per litre in June 2008, are now just paying 92.5 cents in the first week of September per the M.J. Ervin & Associates weekly petroleum prices survey. That’s a whopping 36% savings in 15 months.
