  • The next economic boom, writes Daniel Gross, will be created by the efficiencies unleashed by America's transition from an Ownership Society to a Rentership Society. It's not just housing - citizens are getting used to the flexibility of renting across a whole range of goods. "The U.S. economy needs the dynamism that renting enables as much as - if not more than - it needs the stability that ownership engenders."  [View news story]
Did he blue ice? Well that's great, I'm not Stalin, this isn't 1921, and this certainly isn't the soviet union. And to Geoffster, thanks for the read recommendation but I'm familiar enough. France is toast for the same reasons we almost were, poor economics. These are brief periods of ebb and flow which must not be mistaken for times to panic. Please don't misinterpret and overexaggerate what need be done. The people who feared individulism in the 60s/70s are now supporting it. Why? Because they support what is convenient for THEM, not what's better for society as a whole. And the silly part is what benefits society as a whole, naturally results in a better life for the individual! Not the other way around, no matter how that temporarily affects your bank account you guys.

  • North Korea's much ballyhooed long-range rocket launch ended in apparent failure today, dealing a blow to the prestige of the reclusive and impoverished state that's continually defied international pressure to push ahead with the plan. The Unha-3 rocket broke up and crashed into the South China Sea just moments after it launched.  [View news story]
you know its bad when N korea citizens celebrate the fact that it even got off the ground.. the line between success and failure seems to be blurred for them

  • Two reports from Barclays won't surprise anyone by laying out the difficult math faced by Italy and how close the country's bond market is from a self-reinforcing downward spiral. Particulary interesting is a chart in one showing Italy and Spain are contributing and guaranteeing 32% of the funds for the EFSF. Is it any wonder the EU rescue facility is having trouble selling debt and seeing its own creditworthiness called into question?  [View news story]
So lets sell debt to people underwater in their own? This is the plan in EU?

  • As Pres. Obama touts changes to student loans, the College Board reports an 8.3% increase in tuition at four-year public universities. The cost of a full course load passes $8,000; add room and board, and the average list price now runs at least $17,000/year. Real wages for college grads are dropping, and Obama's proposals may barely put a dent in the problem, but hey, it's good politics.  [View news story]
i work at a for profit university, and all i see is students turning a cold shoulder to loans, and working/saving cash to take weight off of their loans before they jump into school. do they see slight tuition increase while working/saving? yes. but do they save b/c less weight on big interest loan? absolutely.

"In this case, it's the mistake of assuming that if you extend your hand to our enemies, seeking talks, etc., differences can be bridged and peace attained."

Native Texan dont you realize that peace talks are just a check point? Obama isnt doing it for his health or because he just loves to chit chat... hes doing it so the minute one of these extremist leaders cancels their beer date, our red flags go up all over the world! Differences CAN be bridged through communication. And peace? well thats just one of those things that we work towards all the while knowing its damn near impossible.

I do at this point agree with you that we probably wont see obama again after 2012.. unfortunately.

  • President Obama's proposed "Buffett Rule," a minimum tax on people who make $1M or more, is a bad idea, according to Steve Forbes. "The top 1%, they pay about 40% of the income tax anyway," he says, "and when you take money from productive people and put it in the hands of the government bureaucracy, to pay for binge spending... that's going to hurt the economy." (Video).  [View news story]

  • And now stocks are perfectly poised for a letdown. Two bad Greek banks merge into one bigger bad Greek bank? Consumer spending boosted by increased government transfer payments? Bank of America (BAC) and Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) among the leaders? And on one of the year's thinnest-volume days? The basis of a new rally? Oh please...  [View news story]

  • 3 Tips For Young Professionals Building 401k Plans [View article]
i agree with you to a certain extent crazykazoo, the focus of a portfolio should focus on a growing income stream using reinvested dividends. but as a young investor, i need to play around a bit also. i need to learn where the bright AND dark spots of the market are. i need to take risk while i can to increase my skills for the future.

to speak metaphorically, high school was comfortable and great (compounding dividends)! then i took the college risk (riskier assets) and lost some money and some of my soul. but now i know what works for me and what does not... worth the risk.

are you invested in any "high risk assets" or only safer dividend stocks? also what dividend stocks do you like?

  • Annaly Capital Management: A Safe Haven for Investors in Today's Market [View article]
Luke, if you're going to point out friday's crash, also point out the rebound it had immediately after from institutional investors coming and buying it up. not only did the stock price get back to the losses the rest of the market had that day, but it showed where the floor is. big money loves this stock right now because of the nice yield. if ANYTHING in the market is a safe haven right now, its a stock yielding 14% and admired by fund managers. buy NLY on dips
