It was good economics as would have put NJ on the hook for maintaining the system. Governor of Florida rejected Fed free money to build line from Tampa to Orlando for same reason, although that line never made the same sense as the tunnel because at least that boondoggle would have had high ridership.

They were quite necessary in 19th century when you had one company towns and little freedom of movement. They don't translate when you can find a new job from your laptop and companies have to compete for labor. Collectivenism is by its very nature inefficient and corrupt. Hard to incent labor if you are going to get same raise whether you do double the work of the guy next to you or half of it. There is a reason that the entities that have unions (airlines, steelmakers, autos, govt, etc...) are the most inefficient sectors of our economy.

Hate to bust your bubble, but there is only one line in Europe that actually pays for itself and the Chinese system is riddled with safety challenges, corruption and white elephants..........Nuc... is actually best way to reduce greenhouse gases if you believe that global warming nonsense (remember the same sources: NYtimes, Ford Foundation, UN.....were telling you we were going into mini ice age in late 70s).......Here is one fact that kills any sense of this fairy tale. Mt. St Helens put more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere in two days in 1980 that man did worldwide in last 8 years.....and the sun has a bigger effect than volcanos....Pure and utter bs.

That is a good question. On one hand seems similiar, but on the other the subsidies are different in that they are guaranteed loans....mostly because of liability (even though no one has ever died in nuclear plant event), changing govt regulations as well as having no place to store the waste securily (because of $8B Yucca Mountain fiasco)....don't like either, but historically the payback from Nuclear has been exponentially higher than govt rail projects....ala the $1B to $2B a year Amtrak loses.

Thanks Goodness, otherwise we might have added to $6T to the national debt in last four years instead of just $5T.....whew! lol

And just for the record, I am a fiscal conservative, social moderate and economic liberal......so I hate 80% of one party and 97.37% of the other....roughly.....:-)

$CSX.........Nice biased take on govt rail programs. The truth is 95% of govt sponsored rail initiatives turn out to be huge boondoggles along with efforts in alternative energy (See Solyndra, or Synfuels in 70's). The reason these are not funded privately is they make absolutely no economic sense. Better take on this is at http://bit.ly/IH7U57 of course Amtrak's long running sinkhole...........http://bit.ly/IntAqY
