  • Bill Gross channels Paul Krugman? "You've got to spend money," says the Bond King, arguing Europe and the U.K. have erred by pursuing fiscal austerity. "Bond investors want growth much like equity investors," he says. If austerity leads to recession, credit spreads will widen whether or not a country is able to print its own money. As of the end of March, Gross' BOND ETF had one-third of its assets in Treasurys, the highest level since July. [View news story]
I think Gross should have said "You have to spend money wisely".....Govt spending is up more than $1T annually since Obama took office, it is having little effect as it was spent on things that do not foster growth......AKA, we blew our wad.

More on Apple: BGC's Colin Gillis is going contrarian, upgrading shares to Buy and setting a $500 PT (somewhat modest, compared with the PTs of other bulls) ahead of tomorrow's FQ2 report. "Jump in the fire, as any Apple good news, could boost up the stock," haikus Gillis, who has kept a guarded stance on Apple for some time. Separately, boutique shop Avondale has upgraded Apple to Outperform and set a $600 PT; the firm predicts a return to growth (10%-15%) and stabilizing gross margins in FY14

  • Reflections On The Current State Of Apple [View article]
Bears (look below) are assuming Apple's margins will decline to those of Samsung's which justifies a $370 a share price target. However, let's say Apple's margins only decline to halfway from where they are now (which given their ecosystem and broad product line seems like reasonable assumption) and where Samsung's are where now, then by same exercise the stock would be worth $555 a share. If they are maintained because of more innovation, stock will go back to previous highs. Agree, technical picture is weak, but patient/long term value investors have to like the risk/reward picture here..

"Apple (AAPL) only looks cheap if it maintains its profit margins (35.3% in 2012), writes The Brooklyn Investor. Slapping Samsung's mobile operating margin of 18% on Apple's $181B in expected revenue this year then giving it a 10 multiple and adding back cash yields a value of $370/share. Margins might not decline right away (and revenues may increase to offset), but Apple bulls are fighting the powerful historical tendency (particularly for Apple) of excess margins getting competed away"
