  • Jim Rogers Believes World Is Heading for Depression [View article]
If currency debasing was the secret to prosperity, wouldn't Zimbabwe be the economic poster child for the world right now?

It's not the printing that would make the dollar worth more - it's the debt deflation outpacing this printing that reduces the supply of dollars after you net it out.

This is what we saw in 2008, when $10+ trillion in credit was destroyed in a very short period of time. Credit was destroyed faster than the Fed was able to "print"

  • Stocks Rally Again: Should We Still Hold Our Short Positions? [View article]
Daniel: An alternative to ETF's is you could short a portfolio of bellweather stocks - I'd imagine 10 would suffice. Last wave down, nothing was spared the carnage - I'd expect the same to be the case this time.

And you could specifically go short the "trash" that might get especially washed out in spectacular fashion - like heavily indebted companies, financials, etc.

themacattack: Actually, I am expecting a market crash of historic proportions - at least on par with the Great Depression when it's all said and done.

Support didn't count for much during the last wave down (fall '08), and I anticipate that once the fireworks start, the selling pressure will be unrelenting.

Shorting at 1050 was admittedly a mistake. Oh well, it's in the past - now the best we can do it mentally "start from zero" and ask - do we want to be short this market, long, or neither? So my conclusion is short. We'll see - as always the market is the final arbiter of who's right and who's wrong.

Precisely! Markets drive the news. Most investors think it's the opposite.

Nice chart. What about the declining period post '05 on the chart?

Agree you can't look at BDI alone - but pair it up with the other non-confirmations out there (like the Shanghai index rolling over), and I think you've got a lot of ominous storm clouds on the horizon.

"Yes, you can certainly make the argument that the U.S. is no longer a AAA rated country, but if we're AA then"

Yep we’re AA alright – my name is the US dollar, and I’ve been a debtor nation for over 20 years.

Thanks for the comment, and yes, I've found purchasing futures directly to be the easiest and most secure way to speculate on rice.

To do so, you'll either need to setup an online trading account that handles futures, or do the same with a managed brokerage account.

Just make sure to be careful with regards to the leverage!

The dollar index is trading up in Asia markets right now - so it's currently worth more than it was when I wrote this article.

Looks like this rally has "no onions", all - no volume, and a complete lack of conviction around today's up opening. Hard to picture this ship staying afloat much longer!

manoj: For what it's worth I expect the BRIC's, India included, to get hammered once again in the short term. They didn't fare well in '08 to early '09, and I'm expecting a repeat, with the previous lows taken out.

Longer term the Asia growth story is obviously compelling. I just think we are in for some fireworks before we reach the other side of this.
