Great comments by Seeker and Mehul. Good discussion. Still a nervous shareholder.

  • Whole Foods Earnings Preview: Guidance For 2013 Too Conservative [View article]
Looks like a good quarter and 2013 guidance was too cautious after q1 '13. They bumped numbers a tad, which is saying something since mgmt is typically cautious.

Thx, Seeker, but there is still dilution occurring. You are right, though, i should have been more careful with how i said that.

With all due respect, a share repo program ina company where the shareholder is still seeing dilution should be thought of as an effective use of that cash ? In that case, id rather see a dividend.

Sounds like in your last point you think that gross margin could exceed the Sept '10 high of 52% ?

That would be great. We still own 99% of our position.

  • Basic Materials Earnings Redux: Alcoa, Freeport, U.S. Steel And DuPont - Return Of Global Growth? [View article]
Thx, Fun. You might be on to something. I just look at the history of product liability like Merck and Vioxx (?) and so many others. It gets dragged into court for years. DD might have reserved for it already too. Have to read the Q, K.

Thx, Fun. dont follow the company. Didnt know that, but the info is helpful. The previous '05 and '11 highs near $55 is a key technical point of resistance.

One final point: these litigation issues can often disappear or get litigated over years and hence dissolved over time. Since I'm not familiar with the issue, I won't comment further.

Gwyn and Jargon, remember not to confuse the valuation of FB's stock, which would include all fully diluted shares outstanding from exercise of options, etc. with supply / demand issues around the stock, which might be buying or selling of the shares. The ending of the lock-up period last year was suppose dto create all this selling of FB, which from what i can tell, never really happened. The selling of the stock came prior to the big lock-up expiration.

Valuing FB or arriving at an "intrinsic value" for the stock, would include all the inside ownership and the likelihood of dilution from option exercise, so that is a totally different discussion than supply / demand.

Gwyn, sorry that youn think the article is pointless. We try to identify the main catalysts pre-earnings and then discuss the relative valuation.

I think FB is an early-stage growth company and thus its rich valuaton should be given some time to play out. I do liken how the sentiment has changed on the stock.

  • Visa / MasterCard Earnings Preview: Prefer Visa A Bit More, But Sector Fundamentals Intact [View article]
Well that is a good point, Alec, but remember the consumer's propensity to spend is based on his or her income and earning power. Visa and Mastercard are just the toll booths. Monthly job growth matters quite a bit, in terms of a gauge of the overall health of the economy. We are still in a slow-growth economy.

We neglected to mention SBUX's price to cash-flow is just 15(x), since the stock has consolidated over the last year, but cash-flow has risen. At 23(x) forward earnings, the p.e. to growth ratio leaves SBUX fairly valued on that metric.

Thanks, RSmith. $0.50 per share is a big chunk of earnings. GE was dour on Europe, Honeywell was more upbeat on Europe. Will be interesting what Ford says on the call. Hope ONeill was just being cautious.
