As a long term investor, I still hold a few stocks given to me in the 1960s when I was a kid. I believe long term fundamentals rule over short term headlines, especially after taxes are paid. The majority of my investments are long equity positions in widely traded mid- and large-cap companies. Value-based opportunities, especially high growth/low P/E equities, and long term opportunities caused by negative market overreaction are my favorites. Analyst reports are helpful but I am sure to get research information directly from companies’ websites and earnings calls where so much more color can be added to the numbers. I have been investing since 1984 and this strategy has rewarded me with profits and low stress from not watching headlines every day. My formal background is accounting and finance, with 15 years as a corporate Controller.
