I have written multiple articles on how and why Electronic Arts (ERTS) is losing so much money. And I have written multiple articles about what is wrong with the games industry and why it is shedding so many staff.

This latest news is that EA losses are even worse than before. It made a fiscal Q2 loss of $391 million, 26% up from the year before. Whilst game sales are booming and the customer base is bigger than ever before. So now EA has instituted massive redundancies. Current estimates are that 1,500 staff are to go. The worst hit studios seem to be Tiburon, Mythic, Black Box and Redwood Shores. Maybe shareholders should be looking at the strategic management of the company.

Apple (AAPL) had been making MP3 tracks available for a few years on the iStore. When they added a bit more memory and processing power to the iPod, they realized that it could run third party applications, so they made an iStore for applications. And amazingly they were only doing it as a service to users; they didn’t see the business potential.

Now after a little over a year, there are over 100,000 Apps and there have been over 2 billion downloads. 125,000 developers have signed up with Apple and 19.6% of Apps are games. All this has brought up some very pertinent points.

Nintendo (NTDOY.PK) president Satoru Iwata has no option but to admit: “Wii has stalled.” He even admitted that the price drop has failed to arrest the decline: “With the price drop, sales returned to a certain level, but they just did not reach the level of last year around this time”. Which was all as inevitable as night follows day.

A lot of the success of the Wii was just a fad. People became lemmings under the onslaught of peer pressure, just like with the Hula Hoop and Rubik’s Cube for previous generations. And that is that gaming is just another form of media. These represent such a paradigm shift that it is just about impossible to convert content from the old media to games and vice versa. Gaming also has the phenomenally powerful task/reward mechanic which is what will ultimately seal its position as the main method for delivering education.

They really are grinding the opposition down. And it is not as if they are attacking on one front. No, Microsoft believes in being better in every single possible way. The Xbox 360 is now, by a huge margin, the gamer’s choice of consoles from this generation. It is cheaper to buy, has far more games available and has the best online gaming service on earth, Xbox Live. Little wonder that in September Microsoft sold $404 million of Xbox 360 hardware, software and peripherals in North America alone. A phenomenal result.

Part of the success is down to platform exclusives. Halo is massive and Halo 3: ODST has done the business again through this summer. But there is also Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction, Forza Motorsport 3 and Left 4 Dead 2 with Mass Effect 2, Gears of War 3, Crackdown 2, Halo Reach and Alan Wake to come. Relentless and formidable.

Television is old media and, as such, it is rapidly losing relevance to people’s lives. It lacks interactivity, connectivity and non linearity so it is doomed by its technical inferiority. And this is reflected in the behavior of the viewers who are deserting the sinking ship in droves for the greener pastures of the internet and video gaming.

The latest news is that in the UK online advertising spend is now greater than TV advertising spend. In the first 6 months of this year total advertising spend, in the recession, fell by 16%. So it is amazing that in the same period online advertising rose by 4.6%. This is a massive performance and reflects the fact that many marketeers are now realizing that they have to follow their customers.

        Bruce Everiss submits:</strong<

Complete Story »

I was actually in at the very beginning of this in the late 70s and early 80s. Back then if you wrote a game you had to manufacture, market and distribute it yourself. You became a publisher because there was no other way to market. This is what happened at Bug Byte and Imagine in Liverpool, the owners of the companies were, initially, the guys that wrote the games. Once you were up and running, other game writers, who couldn’t be bothered with all the publishing work, came to you and asked if you would handle their stuff too. This was the beginnings of our industry.

So what do game publishers actually do?

When it comes to absolute simulation of motor racing, the best game in the world, by a huge margin, is rFactor on the PC. But add in a bit of arcade elements and the two daddies are Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport. We have moved, in this generation, to a market where you tend to have one massive game in each genre with the “me too” games selling far less successfully than before. But these two games are different because they are platform exclusives, GT5 is only on the Sony (SNE) Playstation PS3 and FM3 is only on the Microsoft (MSFT) Xbox 360. And they are both due out in Q4 ‘09. So we have war.
