  • Microsoft's Make Or Break Moment [View article]
Good stuff Kyle. One thing is encouraging, it's a brave new world for MSFT, even if it hurts or really hurts for a while, it will be good for them I think. They might even innovate again.

  • Some jobs remain beyond the reach of automation, but the list is growing shorter. "The pace and scale of this encroachment into human skills is relatively recent and has profound implications," says MIT's Andrew McAfee. Next: Robots with "eyes" (using technology found in Microsoft's Kinect) that can pick up boxes and drop them on a conveyer belt. Think FedEx and UPS. [View news story]

  • Is Oracle (ORCL) quietly trying to kill the open-source MySQL database? Oracle, which gained control over MySQL's distribution through the Sun acquisition, has been withholding test cases for bug fixes from developers, and has pulled MySQL's revision history. Oracle gets a large chunk of its profits from the proprietary Oracle Database, and had to provide concerned regulators with assurances MySQL would be safe to win approval for the Sun deal. Microsoft and IBM also provide databases that compete with MySQL [View news story]
This is why there is MariaDB cause it was clear from the outset that this crap would begin

  • "The future is unknowable. We have good intentions but all of our projections and estimates will be wrong," begins the "Lawyer Stuff" from Contango Oil's (MCF) latest presentation. "Don't be lazy - read our (filings), and if you lose money - please no tears. Don't forget about risk-free and return free T-bills ... after inflation and taxes, you'll likely only lose 5-10% of your investment." (h/t Jeff Matthews[View news story]

  • Netflix (NFLX) plans to launch its streaming service in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland by the end of the year. The reach into the Scandinavian countries by the company adds to its current non-U.S. base of Canada, Ireland, the U.K., and countries in Latin America. [View news story]
"The more customers the less the cost of content per customer..............."

That assumes that content providers want to make less money on what they sell to NFLX doesn't it...

A combined total of about 28M citizens (according to google), or roughly the same market as Canada (without digging into demographics)...Should be just enough to pay off debt coming current in early 2013!! Go NFLX!

  • A week after Apple-Twitter rumors made waves before getting dismissed, BI is reporting Apple (AAPL) is in talks to buy The Fancy, a Pinterest rival that takes a 10% cut on e-commerce referrals. Tim Cook has a Fancy account, and appears to have talked with the startup's CEO last month. How Apple would leverage The Fancy isn't clear. Maybe an e-commerce solution that uses some combo of the iPhone's camera, 3rd-party apps, Passbook, and AuthenTec?  [View news story]
I've been watching the Fancy from the sneaky start...it's not that fancy

  • Should Amazon (AMZN -0.4%) purchase Best Buy (BBY +0.3%)? Now that the state sales tax issue isn't a major consideration, the question is getting bandied around with a bit more weight. Though the thought of tackling the overheard of +1K brick-and-mortar stores may bring on a migraine for shareholders, having its own showroom (legitimately) and an extra $50B in revenue does have advantages.  [View news story]
Of course they haven't filed, I'm saying for 7300 retail locations they are pretty cheap...

  • HP Blows Its Last Shot At Open Source Credibility [View article]
"For Open webOS we are aiming for support on future hardware platforms where SoC’s support Linux 3.3+ kernel and where open source replacements for proprietary components are integrated. Existing devices cannot be supported because of those many proprietary components, including graphics, networking and lack of drivers for a modern kernel (but of course, there is the Community Edition for those interested in improving the TouchPad).
    "

Proprietary Component drivers that HP didn't write and cannot open source...

Dana, not that HP hasn't pissed off the community enough, but this is understandable from what I can tell.

To a degree. The synergies exist in that it has an international footprint (like AMZN). It can be a highly accessible pickup location (they are testing these at 7-Eleven), and it gives AMZN room to introduce it's own products/featured items/best sellers in a winning way...and it's chapter 11 cheap

Agree, if AMZN wants a showroom it will grab RSH for something like oh 1/20th the price

  • Windows 8 and its dual interfaces represent a huge gamble, and some think it will backfire. Bronte Capital, worried the Metro UI won't function well with a keyboard and mouse: "This will wind up with a lower corporate take up rate than Vista." Valve CEO Gabe Newell, worried about Microsoft's (MSFT) proprietary approach: "Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space." Matt Rosoff: "Windows 8 is for touch screens. Period." Developer Jeff Atwood is "cautiously optimistic." (also: I, II, III)  [View news story]
