    Luke: discovered? Who said anything about hiding something? I did not. Just make the version of wp8 for Lumias different. You're getting caught up in this kernel crap has nothing whatsoever to do with PR and marketing to appease the masses. It's not a conspiracy. How many versions of Vista and w7 exist? Their version names, features and prices are all different but they are all part of the same name family. Nothing's preventing MSFT to say the w8 for Lumia will have X set of features, and the dual core models will have Y set of features. It's just a name, but as Apple has demonstrated, marketing is everything.

    Luke: glad to read your opinion but I believe you are wrong. Apple does this and there is no PR disaster. This no wp8 for Lumias will be the PR disaster because "media" will stir it up and make it so. Let's compare notes in 3 months.

    Luke: I think a developer would be smart enough to know the difference between the 2 WP8 versions. I am talking about Joe Public. Do you think the latest iOS works the same on iphone 3G? No. It does not have all functions.

    The following is an email I wrote to Stephen Elop and his response:

    To: Elop Stephen (Nokia/Espoo)
    Subject: The Lumia WP8 PR problem can be resolved

    Hello Mr. Elop, can you please tell me why it was not decided to tell the public that WP8 would be made available for all current Lumia phones and just have a special version of WP8 just for them, instead of calling it 7.8? Correct me if I am wrong but in the PC world this is done all the time. Not all functions of Windows OS are available to each computer even though they may be able to install it, depending on the specs of each machine. I believe even Apple makes the OS available to older models while removing some functionality. Not only am I now disappointed in my 2 month old Lumia 800 purchase, my 3500 shares of Nokia are over 50% in the red. I believe there is still a small window of opportunity for your PR people to turn this around and tell users WP8 will be made available to all users with the functions that their hardware will permit.

    Charles Santerre,
    ++++

    Thanks – but we chose to make clear that there is a difference here. There will be certain user experiences on WP8 that are not available on WP7 devices because of hardware limitations.

    Regards,

    Stephen
    ++++

    I don't know if he or an assistant wrote it, but regardless, I did not get a warm feeling of positivity. This has me concerned.

    techy46: we are all aware of obsolescence, but the Lumias only went on sale in April in the US; it was May before I could get one in Canada. So the news of no upgrade less than 1Q later, so soon (!), is really harsh!

    DVL: "The phone is selling like mad!" You post a link from 9 April, 2.5 months ago, to prove that point? That's almost one full quarter.

    Paul, thank you for the article. As always you do not have a crystal ball so your "analysis" is not worth more than a guess. I believe what MSFT & Nokia have on their hands is a building PR problem. If I had of been in charge, I would have said that all current Lumias will get WP8. There would have been nothing preventing them for having a "WP8" for Lumias with the very same features promised in WP 7.8. And a promise to deliver every WP8 feature that can possibly be delivered with the current Lumia hardware. When there is a will, there is a way. Look a the Lumia 610, it cannot run Skype or some games well, ok well, maybe there is a way to deliver modified apps for those users. This same reality exists on PCs: if you do not have enough RAM or a strong enough video card, some features, e.g. Aero Desktop will not work well or work at all. As well, all programs have minimun required specs to run on. I am almost tempted to email Elop and Balmer and ask them to reverse their "position". What a PR disaster, and a potential disaster for shareholders. In fact I think I will email Elop.

    Yeah but the ones who advise customers on their phone purchase at the carriers care about the phones and their OS! If I would have known that Lumia was a one version OS, then KO, well guess what, I would have passed! Unless the minor updates really, really impress this is another gigantically stupid decision by the MSFT-NOK partners! I am ashamed to be a NOK shareholder today, not to mention scared as hell that when the backlash of this no upgrade BS hits the streets, the stock will pay the price! What idiots!!!

  • Possibly contributing to today's weakness in Nokia's (NOK -1.8%) is a statement from Finnish PM Jykri Katainen shooting down speculation the Finnish government will buy Nokia shares to help prop up the company. Nokia once accounted for ~4% of Finland's GDP, but makes up less than 1% after major job cuts. Also: Nokia says its cost-cutting won't stop it from investing heavily in China, where its market share has plunged.  [View news story]
    techy46: did you say a few months ago that current high end lumias should be upgradeable to wp8?

    I tried looking up your comments but you follow around 200 companies. Do you write full time on this website or what?

    I invite other readers to have a look at the list of companies techy46 has commented on. It will take your breath away.

  • Microsoft (MSFT) continues a big week by introducing Windows Phone 8 (Apollo) at a developer's conference. WP8 will support multi-core processors, removable memory cards, new screen resolutions, and other hardware improvements. On the software side, changes include Skype integration, Nokia (NOK) mapping software, new enterprise features, NFC-based mobile payments, and the ability to customize live tiles. WP8 won't run on existing WP7 devices. (live blog) (previous)  [View news story]
    I hope wp7.8 has some smashing features, because my 2 month old lumia 800 is already obsolete. If I hadn't so many NOK shares and hopes that they will turn around, I would kiss the company goodbye and say burn, you get what you deserve. The backlash when this is known publicly will not be pretty for a company that is trying to turn itself around. Somebody deserves a big kick in the seat of the pants and I am not sure it isn't me for buying into the BS.

  • Things Aren't Looking So Bad For Nokia [View article]
    DVL: I think what mitrado is trying to say is that the future is not predictable. Sure if the past continues Apple will remain a profitable company, I don't think anyone is saying it will be bankrupt by the fall of 2012. What I believe many are saying is that the stock price will take a hit once competition gets better. If wp8 grabs market share in the coming years it MAY mean that iOS will have a lower market share or not. If it does lose share than the stock price will go down, period. Alternatively Apple may come out with other innovative products that will increase its stock price, who knows? But when it comes to phones, the only constant is change: and who's on top today may be 2nd, 3rd or 10th a few years from now. Look at RIMM, Nokia, et al. As far as their stockpile of profits, sure it is massive, but past (accumulated) profits have zero efffect on stock price. You can have tons of money but lose share.

New MacBook Pro and Air models sporting Intel (INTC) Ivy Bridge processors are introduced, including a $2,199, 15.4" MacBook Pro featuring a retina display with a 2880x1880 resolution. flumeride: you are misinformed. Every windows 7 computer comes with office starter, that is free word and excel. Also you can get if you choose the free Microsoft Security Essentials, i..e free antivirus and antispyware. Concerning your drivers comment, windows will carry the most popular drivers built in for basic printers, but if you have those all in ones, you probably want the full software that came on the cd to get all the features. The same is true for Mac drivers.
