  • How Apple and iPhone Blew It in China [View article]

Certainly Chinese government and the China Mobile did not make it easy for Apple to have the right strategy in China. Apple, though, failed miserably for years in having a right strategy in China.

Shaun's article is very insightful. I thought Wifi was the big thing besides price, but Shaun's Part I changed my opinion.

  • How to Stress Test Your ETFs [View article]
    Haha, interesting viewpoint.

One thing to warn against misuse of this method: Don't look up stocks by ROE and construct your own ETF from high to low. That may not work out pretty.

Question for Peter, have you tried E/P in place of ROE? Could E/P be a better choice since it is product of ROE and B/P so that it takes the market value in consideration?

Yoyomama, your first post was helpful, but your later two were not.

If you could, please focus on the discussion on the PBI business, not your trading strategy, and I believe that is why you got the negative feedbacks.

  • How to Stress Test Your ETFs [View article]
    Peter, I mean Earnings.

Instead of ROE, which is earning/book equity, I am thinking earning/Market price.

In theory, a portfolio can have really high ROE, but terrible low E/P, ie. terribly high PE, due to over enthusiastic investors. In this case, we should expect low or negative return even though with high average ROE.

Thanks to Bill Simpson and "Big Boss". Your following is encouraging me.

It is hard to have to come to the conclusions that I had, but numbers do speak for themselves. I feel sorry for my fellow Chinese if this proves to be accounting fraud. I hope innocent investors get less hurt with this article.

  • 19 Negative Enterprise Value Stocks for 2010 [View article]
It is INCORRECT at least for the case of FMCN.

My calculation shows Market Cap 2.13 Billion, Zero Debt and excess cash 400 million.

The enterprise value is about 1.7 Billion, positive.

  • Bill Miller's Spectacular 2009 Comeback [View article]
If you read about Warren Buffett, the true value investor by any measures, you will find out that he told his investors every year before 1969 that he was going to outperform in bear years but may underperform in bull years.

Bill Miller is the opposite. No, I don't think he is a value investor. He failed.

    1. ODM is an irregular item; we have never heard this item before the last earning call.
    2. Without ODM, the revenue is a miss
    3. If without ODM, the revenue is a beat, then ODM is a nice-to-have and a positive item.
    4. If revenue is a beat only with the addition of ODM, the ODM becomes a suspicious item, a made-up to make the revenue expectation.
    5. To get a good picture of a firm, you have to remove the irregular item. When removing the irregular item, we find this company a miss quarter.

The above logic is proven by the price action following the earning report.
