  • Dendreon Gains Will Be Short-Lived [View article]
Right now doctors are getting paid. Should they be? With your tax money? With mine? The people who cry out that Medicare is going broke, that health insurance rates are too high, are going to face the fact that choices must be made.

You can't have an unlimited draw from a limited pool. That's true whether the pool is public (Medicare) or private (health insurance). And that's what Provenge is demanding. It brings up a long-overdue policy question and debate that we need to have.

I don't object to anyone buying this with their own money. But I do believe policy makers will, in time, set a standard for where money can be spent from a limited pool, and this sits outside that.

  • Walgreen Stock Continuing Collapse In ExpressScripts Fallout [View article]
It should be said that there are now stories out based on a Reuters report claiming inside knowledge of growing opposition to the ESRX-MHS deal http://reut.rs/zT6eGH

    Here's the relevant portion:

"A source familiar with the deal said that key people at the FTC believe it should be stopped but want to ensure they have adequate evidence to win a court fight to stop it.

"A decision on whether or not to sue is expected by the end of February or early in March, the source said."

You've got an unnamed source making a claim about "key people" who haven't yet decided there's enough evidence to win a court fight against stopping the deal.

The most recent story I've seen just says opposition is growing http://trib.in/yvYXX8 so the idea that it's dead remains just rumor. You're right about the stocks -- makes me glad I bailed on MHS at $62.

  • Oil Refinery Vs. Production Bet Subject To Change [View article]
Current prices are held high by speculation and fear. Anyone who reads the industry's blogs (as I do) such as the Oil Drum will come across many many stories fearing supply disruption from every side.

No. The "99%" movement is asking for little more than what people like John Sherman and Teddy Roosevelt provided back in the day -- that is control over monopolies, and some care toward those other than the gilded classes.

Many in the "99%" movement also support the programs of FDR and LBJ, but that does not make them socialists, except in the fever dreams of the current right. Those fever dreams have a name that starts with an "f" but the second letter is not "r" -- it's "a."

In this case I felt that my political feelings, which run counter to my investment decision, merited disclosure. I'd rather disclose more to you than less. If that's a mistake in your view I apologize.

  • Should Apple Shareholders Take Boycott Talk Seriously? [View article]
Concentrating solar power is an older technology but hasn't proven itself at utility scale. (It's great at small scale for hot water.) Many projects originally designed for CSP are going to Solar PhotoVoltaic instead.

The purpose of the Motorola demands (and I agree they're excessive) is to try and limit the damage going the other way. It's negotiation by another means.

If Apple sold 37m phones in a quarter, it's on pace to sell 154 m in a year. But understand the global market is truly gargantuan.

You have to resubmit them. And after they're published I don't think it's right to edit them.

  • Amazon Beats On Earnings, But What's In The Cloud? [View article]
Performance is not the issue. I'm certain it will be competitive. I saw some numbers a while ago and they were competitive then.

The problem is that their customer set is conservative, less willing to switch to cloud for anything. Those willing to switch to cloud are antagonistic to Microsoft generally, and to the original set-up of Azure specifically.

Microsoft is seeking to address this issue with Linux support, but it's something it needs to negotiate from a position of humility. Next time Steve Ballmer shows humility will be the first. That's a problem.

What we may want is not how we must invest if we want to profit. I agree with you on the merits of the case, but failing to settle is continuing to cost WAG money and capital. Disapproval of the merger would not end the matter, it might just give WAG another place to go.

But the place of PBMs in the marketplace is something beyond my ability to control, or any other investor's. We have to deal with it, through our money, as best we can.

  • Can Kaz Hirai Make Sony Competitive? [View article]
The best reason not to own Sony was Howard Stringer. The idea that content and hardware should be united, that the businesses are remotely similar, that there is such a thing a "synergy," is stupid.

Hirai may be able to raise a lot of money, and the stock price, by unraveling this. The failure of the Stringer strategy gives him the space to do this. And it's the only reason i have to be hopeful about Sony's future.
