  • EchoStar's a Buy on AT&T Buyout Speculation [View article]
    just hit the wires:

16:10 DISH EchoStar: WSJ Deal Journal discusses AT&T/DISH rumors (51.08 +2.04) -Update-

WSJ Deal Journal reports investors in orbit over a possible acquisition of the co by AT&T (T) may want to come back to earth. After speaking to a number of bankers who follow the industry, they don't expect AT&T will be pulling the trigger on a purchase of the $23 bln satellite-TV co any time soon. Rumors about a possible tie-up between the cos have been flying today. From everything they have gathered, it looks dubious that Goldman has been hired to explore a deal, as TheStreet suggests. Why don't the bankers think there will be a deal? Turns out a number of them have, in fact, been pitching the business to AT&T, but they haven't been solicited by the telecom giant in a formal "bake-off". If AT&T were so eager to do a deal, why resort to what bankers often call the "I'll shoot myself" strategy to bring them to the negotiating table? The purchase of a big satellite competitor like EchoStar could be seen by the mkt as a sign that AT&T's effort to organically grow a big TV business, known as U-verse, isn't working..

  • Why Cisco Should Buy Alvarion - Not Navini [View article]
Thank you for a great article. We are long ALVR as well and down sharply this month, but sticking to our position, as we feel WiMAX is a long term bet and ALVR ultimately WILL get acquired.

  • Five Major Questions On Oracle’s BEA Buyout Bid [View article]
BEAS mgmt is being stubborn: they got more than enough and Uncle Ellison was generous this time around.

    Carl should be pleased.

COGN, TIBX are the next ones to go, but don't expect anything until after the holidays......

  • Analysts Give BEA Scant Hope For Alternative To Oracle Bid [View article]
There is no way BEAS get a better offer. BEAS mgmt is being stubborn: the stock was in the gutter for a while and they are lucky ORCL is buying them at a 25% premium.

Talking about BEAS now is spilt milk: it is time for us to now look at what else Carl may flip next.

  • EagleTest Systems Should Rise on Great Canaccord Adams Call [View article]
I'll pass, I looked @ EGLT and they are a needle in a haystack. Id be surprised if it survives above the 50 day. Short it on a pullback. The semi space is brimming with uncertainty and you are better off sticking to quality. Our #1 idea in the space remains VSEA, which is attractive under 50, by a mile.

Listen to the LRCX call -- things are nowhere near "squared away." Are they ever?

  • IDEXX Laboratories: A Solid Bet on the Pet Economy [View article]
I just got word that IDXX may soon SPLIT their stock, which would be a net plus, in our opinion

Right now, IDXX is a $3B+ company with only 29m shares in the float...the writing is on the wall.

We will pick up more IDXX within the Q.

I should add that Ruane Cunniff, a deep value shop, owns 15% of IDXX. Ruane runs the Sequoia Fund, whose returns speak for themselves...

I think that at 37x forward, IDXX is probably not a "cheap" stock, but it is going higher anyways. People love their pets and will run thru brick walls to make them happy....that's why IDXX makes us happy.

    Buy on any weakness.

  • WiMax (Over) Hype: Alvarion Not Likely To Be A Target After All [View article]
    watch out!!!!

The author quotes QCOM CEO Paul Jacobs from 2 years ago saying "WiMAX is dead." So dead in fact that in January 2006 QCOM bought Flarion a company developing a variant of the OFDM technology on which WiMAX is based.

    Hmmm...

We have a big bet on ALVR -- please refrain from trying to take the stock down with old info...the world has changed in 24 months and WiMAX is increasingly deployable.

We'll all see how solid ALVR is when they report the Q in November....
