  • Apple Still A Buy Regardless Of Steve Jobs' Departure [View article]
Solid points in the article. It's also worth mentioning that despite Apple's impressive record in innovation, their business and marketing strategies have arguably been just as important. There were many personal Mp3 players on the market before the iPod, and many with similar memory capabilities. By stressing ease of use and attractive design, Apple under Jobs often outsold cheaper and more effective devices. Their products will be continue to be status symbols no matter who's in charge.

  • Cutting Our Gold Position As Mania Continues [View article]
"I think the non-investing public is far more aware of what gold is doing than it was two years ago."
Very good point. It is for this reason I beieve that mining stocks present a superior investment opportunity, as they undoubtedly benefit from gold mania yet have not been flooded with the same volume of investment dollars as gold ETF's or bullion.

  • Global Rebalancing Will Come, But With Stagflation [View article]
Populist movements often lead to short-sighted economic policy, but at least in the US, there does not seem to be a clamoring for protectionism at the moment. If anything, the budget crisis has led politicians to question such protectionist policies as farm subsidies.

  • Buy Molycorp On Dips, Reap The Rewards Down The Road [View article]
Molycorp is a very good stock pick if you're bullish on rare earths, but I'm sort of on the fence. REE prices did drop sharply last year, but many analysts have suggested that it was a sort of regression to the mean and that rare earth's were overvalued prior to the drop. Other than further possible Chinese restrictions, what is your basis for the positive forward valuation of rare earth prices?

  • Digging For Gold Mining Stocks [View article]
That's probably the best equity play in the gold sector unless you want to due exhaustive due diligence picking individual juniors. As mentioned in the articles, most of the majors are still trying to extricate themselves from a of questionable projects and high debt loads.

  • 3 American Junior Industrial Miners With Plenty Of Upside [View article]
American Manganese is down to 4 cents, American Vanadium has shot up to the .80-.90 range since this article was posted, and Western Lithium is basically where it was. Pre-production miners are a high-risk high-reward proposition. I still think the Defense Logistics Agency or some other government body will take some action to increase domestic production of Manganese, but direct collaboration with AMYZF may not be one of them.

  • 3 American Junior Industrial Miners With Plenty Of Upside [View article]
I believe that rising manganese prices and the possibility of government assistance makes the stock good value where it is, even with the increase in projected costs. There are clearly risks involved, and if you're less bullish on Manganese and its strategic value than I am, this stock might not be for you.

  • 3 American Junior Industrial Miners With Plenty Of Upside [View article]
I mentioned that Artillery Peak was operational over 50 years ago, abandoned because of falling ore grades and cheap foreign supply and that now American Manganese is moving in because of a new technological process that allows economical processing of lower-grade materials. In general it's not uncommon for properties in the developed world to operate on mines that have already been exploited to some degree.
That said, you are certainly asking the right questions. Mineral Property reports overseen by a qualified geologists called NI 43-101's contain all data about past drilling, and I encourage prospective investors to look them up on

  • 3 American Junior Industrial Miners With Plenty Of Upside [View article]
Global mining output faces a number of challenges going forward, no doubt. I'm just trying to identify some overlooked opportunities therein, and I believe that even moderate emerging market demand for steel can sustain some of the necessary inputs like Vanadium and Manganese.

  • Frontier Markets Harbor High-Reward Investment Opportunities: Carlos Andres [View article]
Bolivia is too politically unstable and Argentina's economic mismanagement will lead to predatory practices. But other countries in South America, for example Chile, have a much better track record for mining. Don't paint the continent with a broad brush.

  • Gold: Mining For Miners And Looking For More Like Newmont [View article]
I too am very bullish on the miners. They are generally in excellent cash positions, good fiscal health and are not seeing too many upticks in their input costs. Newmont, in addition to being a good long investment, has a favorable trading position right now as it seems to be trailing many gold producers' indices, despite historical correlation between the two.
Since you mentioned Goldcorp and looking for fresh opportunities among mining companies, this article takes a look at companies that are producing a nice volume of gold from greenstone belts:

  • Why I Ran Away From Municipal Bonds In 2007 [View article]
There's over 20 years worth of court records to tell investors that municipal bankruptcy will not necessarily mean the full claims of GO bonds will be settled, with La Marque above citing some good examples. If every investor had an 100% guarantee of being paid in full, why are the rating agencies even involved?

  • Profitable Trading Spreads From African Gold Mining [View article]
The Makapela belt is going to be huge for Loncor. For those projecting gold to hit 2k, the market value of the gold in Vein 1 alone would be worth over $2 billion.

  • Banro Corporation: A Golden Investment Opportunity [View article]
Good article. Despite political and economic risk in the DRC, Banro has avoided the conflict-prone areas of the country. Its decision to re-invest cash flows in infrastructure and community initiatives is a strategy that will pay long-term dividends and will go a long way towards building much-needed trust. For every other reason you mentioned, Banro has solid prospects for growth.

  • China, Emerging Markets Point To Double-Dip [View article]
Great article and nice invocation of the skyscraper theory. I noticed that your analysis is focused on Brazil, India and China and the largely ignored warning signs therein. What about the traditional fourth in that group, Russia? Do you think that they have similar economic weaknesses and if so can they weather the storm through sheer force of oil revenues?
