  • Skpe-led IPO Market May Help Big Banking Bounce Back

    There’s an old bear-market rule in banking: you know when a recovery is really underway when companies start to go public again. Unlike most of the industry’s guidelines, this one is actually pretty accurate - after all, if someone is willing to put money into a company with no trading history, that’s about as good a sign of the return of risk appetite as you can hope for.

    In the first quarter of this year, there have been just three new issues in the U.S., or less than one a month. The latest, online educator Bridgepoint Education (BPI), raised $141.75 million Wednesday, but priced itself 30% cheaper than it had originally planned to, according to Reuters. On the surface of it, that might not seem like overly optimistic news. (The shares were trading up around 10% Thursday).
