  • Why Putin And Cheap Oil Are Bad News For Gold Miners [View article]
I have a feeling that Putin will end up just like Mr. Gorbachev. Remember him he now lives in the United States and rails against American triumphalism.

  • Why Putin And Cheap Oil Are Bad News For Gold Miners [View article]
Putin made the storm worse. By the way if what you say is true, then Putin is a megalomaniac. His imbecilic efforts to "kill the dollar" will instead "kill the ruble" and make Russia into a Chinese colony. I think the real mistake is overestimating Putin and Russia, something we've done before. I think you see conspiracies where they don't exist.

  • Costco's Canadian Success Story [View article]
You hit the nail on the head here. People like Costco unlike certain other retailers out there and enjoy going there. People think of a trip to Wal-Mart like a trip to the dentist as an unpleasant chore.

  • Revenues Prove That Cable TV Is Not Dead Yet [View article]
Actually part of the problem is that Google Fiber is only available in two or three cities right now. We don't know how well it works or if its level of service will be any better than cable. My guess is part of the reason the roll out is so slow is that it is not working as advertised. It might be years before it reaches you. By then the cable companies might have caught up. One strong possibility is that Google will simply license its technology to cable and phone companies at some point. After all they have the infrastructure and people in place to install and maintain it.

Buffett seems to have his touch. I was just pointing out an interesting development at BOA.

  • Xoom And PayPal Out To Disrupt Payments Industry [View article]
I'm not sure myself because it is not available yet. Stay tuned. What happens is that the local thugs and corrupt police simply take the cash from the people as they walk out of the Western Union office in certain countries. People who don't fork over the remittance money get a night stick over the head.

  • Payment Solutions Could Be A Threat To Bank Of Internet [View article]
The problem with your thesis is all the businesses already using PayPal for just that. PayPal's merchant services processed $125 billion in 2013. As for all the other stuff you mention Remy Acme Plumbing can sit down at any computer with an internet connection and locate hundreds of alternatives for those services. Chances are Acme Plumbing is already using PayPal and taking PayPal payments. My theory is that BOFI is a niche player offering traditional banking services to upper middle class professionals dissatisfied with traditional banks.

  • Is Sears Entering The Retail Death Spiral? [View article]
JC Penney is proving that right now. You're right. Sears still has a lot of customer loyalty. Unfortunately its not being exploited.

  • Is Sears Entering The Retail Death Spiral? [View article]
Actually that's an estimate we don't know the real cost of the loan. If its for working capital the situation might be worse because it shows the only way Sears can get the capital is to borrow it. What happens if the merchandise they load up on does not sell? Then what? Lampert wouldn't be putting the money in if he didn't think he'd get some back.

  • Can Target Survive In Today's Retail Environment? [View article]
Interesting. Now Target is mindlessly imitating Walmart. Target Express could be real bad news for the Dollar stores. Target's also participating in Google Shopping Express.
