Thank you Ramisle, and others, I appreciate the insight. Look, i'm not trying to defend this guy, I just haven't seen anything criminal that compares to bernie madoff. I just feel the situation deserves another look with the stock where it is now. If you don't feel comfortable, don't invest, buying stocks under five dollars rarely is comfortable. Just don't inflate it into something that it isn't. Thank You.

Worse than both Enron and Madoff, wow. Bernie madoff stole 40 billion dollars from investors, and funneled it all to himself and family members. This guy funneled a few 100 million here and there to family members, all of which providing something back to shareholders, and being completely open about it. Madoff investors ended up with nothing, DRYS investors have 39 drybulk carriers and 6 deepwater rigs, all running smoothly with global expansion on the horizon.

I'm not saying the guy is an eagle scout, but the comparisons above bring motive into question. I do regret not including this in the article other than to say they have a lot of people to pay before shareholders. Here's an article on the subject, back when he stock was trading at $75, that way readers can see more specifically what the concerns are and make their own decisions.

  • Google Wins in Yahoo / Microsoft Search Deal [View article]
Thank's for the article. I've always found that even though I'm only getting 30-35% of available search traffic from Yahoo and Microsoft, they convert 10 times better than Google for a tenth the price. Also, I have found the transisition to be so far pretty smooth. We'll have to wait and see how smooth things go in mid to late October when all of the paid traffic switches.

I've heard people say that Google converts better, but I just don't see that. Of course I haven't even been able to advertise in Google for years because it has gotten so ridiculously expensive.

Sorry, I was thinking profits and writing margins, it should read "gross profit margins in the 50-80% range". Thank you for the correction.

This affects H&R Block, Liberty and JTX. Overall, very bad. The recent improvements to their other products will help. A complete shift and focus to the online business may be the only way forward, not to mention imminent consolidation. I feel like the RAL issue has already been well priced into this stock, however.

  • Avoid Paying the 'Hype Premium' for Gold: Buy Gold Mining Stocks Instead [View article]
Why buy bullion at an all time high with all the extra fees and scams that come with it. I don't know if there is a bubble in Gold. My point is that much less of a bubble exists in the mining stocks which is evident from their valuations. The high gold prices have given these company's more money for exploration, which means more production and efficiency in the future. If gold plummets, chances are their cost of delivery will also plummet and profit margins may shrink slower than the price of gold, while revenues continue to climb. If gold does stay high, they outperform it. If your worried about the problems in Mexico, slight changes to royalty rates elsewhere, and all the other risks that come with owning any stock, diversify into the ETF.

Yes it's true, stocks are more volatile than gold, which is why I mentioned putting a lot less capital at risk. The five year comparison actually confirms just how much hype is built up in Gold.

  • Popular, Inc.: Back With the In-Crowd [View article]
Fair enough. To clarify, BPOP has a ratio of non-accrual loans, or loans for which they are not expected to collect principal and interest, and related Commercial Real Estate loans to total assets of 4.2% and if you add repossessed real estate, the total nonperforming assets ratio is 8%. Excluding government-guaranteed balances, the total nonperforming assets ratio drops to 4.20%. Popular's loan loss reserves were at 5.51% of total loans as of March 31, and the their net charge-off ratio for the first quarter was 3.84%. These numbers do not include their recent acquisitions and planned sale of their Evertec subsidiary.
