  • Are There Enough Chips For A Robust iPhone 5 Launch? [View article]
Ok, Apple appears to be foreshadowing (pun intended) the launch of the iPhone 5 on September 12, 2012. Still I question does Apple have enough 28 nm chips for a robust launch?

"Apple has been looking to spread its supply chain to reduce its reliance on Samsung. The U.S. firm frequently faces a supply crunch when a new product is launched, triggering a consumer stampede that drives demand far in excess of supply and production capability." - Reuters.Com reporting.

  • iPhone 5 Will Be A Game Changer For Sprint [View article]
An unnamed and anonymous employee of a Sprint store told me that he sees just about every day people switch to Sprint from other carriers, and mainly Verizon, due to Sprint's unlimited data capability.

  • 'John Carter': Despite Losses Its Impact on the Walt Disney Co. Likely Limited [View article]
Bob Iger CEO of Walt Disney Co said on an interview with Bloomberg that it was fortunate to have the Avengers come so close to John Carter...since John Carter was a great disappointment and Avengers was such a huge success.

The Walt Disney Co succeeded in part due to the success of the "The Avengers" as reported. International sales of "The Avengers" were strong. "John Carter" did well internationally. However, The Walt Disney Co.'s bottom line relied in part on sales of "The Avengers" as reported. "John Carter" had limited impact on The Walt Disney Co. and in in particular its Studio Entertainment segment.

Some folks mentioned an August 7, 2012 date for announcement of the Apple iPhone 5 launch. As of the writing of this comment, Apple has made no such announcement. However, Sprint is reported as reducing the price of the Apple 4S by $50. Perhaps Sprint is trying to move inventory for a September 2012 launch of the new iPhone?

The Walt Disney Co. is coming out with earnings after hours today. Analysts appear to be at .93 earnings per share. I believe that earnings will exceed this number due to the "Avengers" and "Brave" as well as increased revenues from parks.

Contracts for supply necessarily must look to the future and make assumptions. If Qualcomm was copacetic, then why seek additional support from foundries other than TMSC? You may wish to look into TMSC.

As for the implication that I am on the payroll of anyone, to the contrary, I only receive the page view monies as given here on SeekingAlpha.com. I did not have at the time this article was published and still do not have a position in any of the stocks mentioned whether directly or derivatively.

Apple certainly can keep its supply chain a secret. Apple may have already secured sufficient supply of 28 nm chips and I said as much in the article.

However, as I commented below, other authors likewise note Qualcomm's statements regarding supply of 28 nm chips. This article went further and attempted to explore supply of 28 nm chips as stated in public sources regarding Qualcomm and foundries, from which Quallcomm has chosen to seek assistance, with a view to the rumored date for the iPhone 5 launch.

    There you have it.

We all may have missed something in this discussion regarding availability of 28 nm chips, namely if Apple is offering a mini-iPad would not this device also use a 28 nm chip and thus need a supply of 28 nm chips as well? Apple would need additional 28 nm chips and supply if incorporating 28 nm chip into a mini-iPad and then launching it this Fall.

Would a 28 nm chip fabricator ramp up production as a back-up only? I don't believe so too much of a capital outlay to build the fabricators and factories for anticipated and not contracted capacity.

No, JIT is just in time manufacturing, if Qualcomm was able to meet JIT for its 28 nm chips for its customers then why seek the assistance of 4 fabricators? Perhaps Apple has secured its supply. However, greater demand across the devices that use 28 nm chips and Apple's launch of the iPhone 5 appear to have put fabricators of 28 nm chips to the task.

I think differently. Consumer sales of which the iPhone 5 will be are cyclical, whether Apple books the sales in September, October, December or later is significant.
