"The Avengers" debuted to record setting box office receipts - BoxOfficeMojo.com reports the following in receipts: $200.3 Million domestically and $441.5 Million internationally for a total of $641.8 Million. "The Avengers" opened internationally to take advantage of the May Day holiday celebrated throughout a good portion of the world but not in the U.S.A. John Carter was a good movie. The Avengers may be both a good movie and extraordinarily profitable. In any event, The Walt Disney Co. has moved past concerns about John Carter with the box office receipts from "The Avengers."

  • Stung by its $200B boondoggle John Carter, Disney (DIS) is mounting a superhero-style marketing campaign to ensure The Avengers is a blockbuster. Expectations are high, as analysts say the Marvel Comics-inspired movie may generate U.S. ticket sales of $155M in its opening weekend, which would surpass last month's huge start by The Hunger Games.  [View news story]

I do believe that international sales may take the sting out of the box office returns. I believe that properly marketed sequels may generate revenues and likewise secure "John Carter" as a franchise. Apparently, the themes present in "John Carter" appealed to the international audience more than the domestic USA audience. As Stan Lee would say, Enuff Said about ESPN.

  • 3 Things Not To Overlook From Disney's Earnings [View article]
Thank you for the comments. I believe Disney may be best viewed as a conglomerate. As with many conglomerates, you must weigh/analyze each strategic business unit to get a feeling/result about growth, revenue, earnings, and the like. As for dividend, Disney pays dividends annually. As for a long term play, I agree. I am long on Disney.
