"Apple has been looking to spread its supply chain to reduce its reliance on Samsung. The U.S. firm frequently faces a supply crunch when a new product is launched, triggering a consumer stampede that drives demand far in excess of supply and production capability." - Reuters.Com reporting.

An unnamed and anonymous employee of a Sprint store told me that he sees just about every day people switch to Sprint from other carriers, and mainly Verizon, due to Sprint's unlimited data capability.

Bob Iger CEO of Walt Disney Co said on an interview with Bloomberg that it was fortunate to have the Avengers come so close to John Carter...since John Carter was a great disappointment and Avengers was such a huge success.

Would a 28 nm chip fabricator ramp up production as a back-up only? I don't believe so too much of a capital outlay to build the fabricators and factories for anticipated and not contracted capacity.

I think differently. Consumer sales of which the iPhone 5 will be are cyclical, whether Apple books the sales in September, October, December or later is significant.

The Motley Fool published an article on Cirrus Logic's earnings and guidance, which questioned the number of iPhone 5 units that would be available based in part on Qualcomm's comments.

Reuters published a story wherein a source stated that the September 12, 2012 launch date may shift, which statement was made conditioned anonymity as reported by Reuters.

You might be correct, and I said as much in the article. However, if what you say is correct, then Apple has secured enough production for the iPhone 5, and the scarcity of 28 nm would likely be borne by other products. 28 nm chips are not cotton or some other natural resource that you mine, farm, or produce. 28 nm chips are research and development, complicated and intricate engineering, and capital investment, hence the phrase "ramp up" when speaking of production as did Qualcomm.

Taiwan Economic News announced that UMC and Samsung were selected as additional providers for Qualcomm on July 2, 2012. Why choose additional suppliers if you are "ramping up production in line with expectations?"

@slacker711. Are you referring to the following: "We expect to ramp up to about 68,000 wafers per month by the end of the year, 28 nanometer, 68,000 12-inch wafers per month by the end of the year. And by fourth quarter, we will be nearly caught up with the demand and we expect to fully meet the demand from the first quarter of 2013 on we will fully meet the 28 nanometer demand. It is also then that we expect that the 28 nanometer gross margin will catch up with the corporate average." http://seekingalpha.co.... If so, Qualcomm appears to be talking about calendar year and not fiscal year which fits my thesis.

@camus111 - Publishing is not instantaneous. I responded to the Seeking Alpha Tech Currents article and cite to iMore. iMore cites a source but neither points to earnings conference call, financial news, nor identifies the source. Well, all I know is what I read in the papers - Will Rogers. Perhaps Apple or Qualcomm or someone else can make a verified and confirmed report about launch date for iPhone 5 and the number of units anticipated to be available, i.e. inventory?

Samsung which fabricates chips is unlikely to be supply constricted for its own uses. Samsung is competing effectively with Apple. Again, if Apple does have sufficient supply of 28 nm chips then why not say it?

I reviewed the Seeking Alpha Tech Currents which cites to an iMore article. The iMore article cites an unnamed source which was previously reliable according to the author of the article. Forbes has an article which cites a September launch as being rumored. My questions still is the following: even if Apple launches the iPhone 5 in September or October 2012, how many units will be available?
