  • New Russian ETF Comes With Risky Valuations [View article]
Surprising that the overall valuation of the Russian stock market seems to assume so little political risk. My sense is that if there's a correction in the US market, emerging markets will take a real beating.

  • Stock Portfolio Adjustments for Global Warming and Rising Sea Levels [View article]
How likely is coastal flooding near term?

Perhaps a better short-term bet is that a more responsible US policy will involve higher taxes on gasoline like every European government has, which will severely reduce SUV sales, further hitting Ford and GM. And that may then impact Costco (COST), as it would suffer if people trade down to smaller cars that can't carry all those large boxes. You don't see many Mini's outside Costco...

  • Portfolio Rebalancing: The Ins and Outs [View article]
This discussion of Rebalancing Rules that also suggests that investors should rebalance based on allocation, not on time. Look also at the suggestion that investors should wait for asset class allocation overshoot before rebalancing. Would love to know people's thoughts on that.

  • Why I'm Against Fixed Income ETFs [View article]
    Excellent article, Richard.

But what about the iShares Lehman Short Treasury Bond Fund (SHV)? Isn't it just a very convenient and cheap way to buy short term Treasury notes that would actually make sense for a lot of people?

  • Interactive Q&A: Katie Jacobs Stanton, Product Manager of Google Finance [View article]
    Hi Katie,

If you had to describe the biggest difference in approach between Google Finance and Yahoo Finance from your perspective, how would you do it?

And now a more tangential question: What's it like being based in India? Can you tell us a bit about what it's like for you to be there personally, and what you're seeing in terms of the tech industry there?

Thank you for doing this -- it's great to have you on Seeking Alpha!

    Hi Dick,

Thanks for doing this. Two questions:

-- Can you tell us more about Feedburner's revenue model?

-- Which public company do you think Feedburner poses the greatest long term threat to?

  • The Options Scandal Hits Apple and CA, Equinix and Intuit [View article]
News is breaking now -- 10 months after this news brief was written -- that former Apple CFO Fred Anderson has issued a statement blaming Steve Jobs for backdated options grants. I still think that investors are underestimating the risk of the options issue to Apple's stock...

  • American Express: Watch the Dividend [View article]
    Hi George,

The other comments here actually illustrate an interesting point: the identification of dividends with "value" is questionable. Buffett realized that the best way to deliver long term value is to compound returns, and that explicitly means NOT paying a dividend. And the theoretical arguments for dividends are weak; see:

Why Dividend Paying Stocks are a Mistake

Thanks for doing this Q&A, Ned.

There's been speculation recently that the recent results from the online brokerages might lead to consolidation. See for example this view from Barron's.

What's your view of the potential for consolidation in the online brokerage sector? Who would it make most sense for?

  • Stock Earnings Yields vs. Bond Yields 1/85-3/07 [View article]
"The fact that the S&P 500's earnings yield is higher than the 10-year Treasury yield suggests that either stocks are undervalued or bonds are overvalued."

Why? Treasuries are a risk-free asset class, whereas stock aren't. There should be a return premium for riskier assets, no?
