  • Five Oil and Alternative Energy Developments to Watch [View article]
Strobe, I'm thinking not for a while. I don't see any real competitive advantage, and they've consistently diluted their shareholders because they haven't made money for so long. The cash that they raised is now falling in real value due to inflation. And the telecom equipment sector continues to consolidate, and that hurts the component vendors. What's to like about the stock to make me cover? Not a lot.

Willtom, that's really fascinating. Can you provide any more details and tell us about what you do?

  • Asus Eee: Threat to Apple, Microsoft, HP, Dell and the Hard Drive Vendors? [View article]
Monty, I'm not saying that this proves that Apple's laptop sales will be weak. In fact, the Apple stores I visited during the run up to the holidays were always mobbed.

I'm just saying that the Amazon lists are based on real data, so they shouldn't be ignored. At the very least, they require some thought and explanation, not a knee-jerk reaction.

  • Goldman Sachs and Mean Reversion [View article]
Markos, I'm also not sure about reversion to the mean with individual stocks:

    >> Even with broad asset classes, there's risk that instruments don't trend together over time -- see seekingalpha.com/artic... .

    >> And individual stocks tend to exhibit trend-defying momentum -- see seekingalpha.com/artic...

  • ETF Investing Guide: A Quick Checklist [View article]
Noah, there's no easy way to get out of the sort of situation you're in as far as I know. One possibility: move the contents of your account to an online brokerage account where at least you won't have to pay an asset based fee.

If anyone else has any ideas, please leave a comment below.

  • First Solar Earnings Strong, Shares Up - The Sector is Shining [View article]
We fixed a typo in this post. The original read:

"The huge beat - revenue ex a special gain of 49 cents versus an expected 19 cents..."

And we've now corrected that to:

"The huge beat - EPS ex a special gain of 49 cents versus an expected 19 cents..."

  • Crocs F3Q07 (Qtr End 9/30/07) Earnings Call Transcript [View article]
The original version of this transcript contained an error. It said:

"During the months of July, August and December we shipped 3.8 million pairs of shoes. This compared to 6.8 million pairs shipped in the same period of 2006."

The correct number should have been:

"During the months of July, August and December we shipped 13.8 million pairs of shoes. This compared to 6.8 million pairs shipped in the same period of 2006."

Quite a difference! We apologize for the error.

  • Seeking Alpha Named Most Informative Investing Web Site by Kiplinger's [View article]
Thanks for the kind feedback. This a testament to the combination of passionate non-journalists (our contributors), intelligent filtering, tagging and editing (our editors), and supplementary resources that make the site comprehensive (transcripts, news briefs, IPO coverage etc).

  • Apple Cuts iPhone Price by $200, Introduces ‘Best iPod Ever’; Shares Fall 5% [View article]
CNBC said Apple's stock was down after the announcement because investors thought the lower priced iPhone would mean lower profits for Apple. But I'm not sure that makes sense: the lower priced iPhone should significantly expand the market and ultimately lead to greater profits. So I think you're right: the stock was down because investors bought ahead of the news and sold when the news was released. Which brings me to a wider point: these news briefs are really excellent, and it's wonderful to have you as a writer on Seeking Alpha, Roy. Little (or not so little) nuances like why Apple's stock sold off show that you really understand the stocks, not just the news stories.

Straight Arrow, thanks for your feedback. We have a ton of articles about Wisdom Tree ETFs. As a starting point, look at the listing here, and the articles listed at the bottom, particularly the interview with Wisdom Tree's director of research: seekingalpha.com/artic... -- David

the-Bird, thanks for your feedback and suggestions. We haven't talked much about what's behind the new site -- a totally new publishing and user management system that should allow us to build exactly the features on your wish list. The reason this was such a large project for us was because it was about much more than a new web design, but that will only become apparent later. -- David

Barney, this is really helpful. We've got a particular challenge with full-text emails -- they're slowing down the sending of our headlines-only emails, and as a result we're delaying the sending of full text emails. It's also very expensive to send the emails. But we've resisted charging for anything. How would you feel if we switched the full text emails to a once-per-day email alert with headlines only?
