Does anyone understand now why $GOOG acquired Motorola? Was it just irrational patent panic?

    • Chris DeMuth Jr.: MMI was a fairly significant investment of ours at the time and we thought it was a stupid deal; we owned MMI from the breakup.

    • Chris DeMuth Jr.: We were relieved to be rid of it and thought it was a zany price. Our view was that $GOOG had too much cash to be responsible with it.

    • domi1kenobi: Yep still is.. moto x is mediocre

    • Yosef Levenstein: $GOOG needed to learn hardware development and like Chris said, have too much cash. I expect them to extrapolate what they can then discard

    • James Sands: Why isn't $GOOG taking advantage of their Internet assets, rather than pushing hardware development? They are an advertising co....

    • J. Sobes: James - Samsung mobile sales were greater than all of google, android WAS to take advanage of their internet assets but w hardware, more $$$

    • James Sands: Thanks J. just seems that cos. like $YELP, $FB, $LNKD, $TRIP are growing strongly and $GOOG not competing as well in these areas.

    • James Sands: Also a little baffling how YouTube is progressing, versus say $YOKU, Hulu, Netflix, etc. $GOOG seems too schizo, how can they focus all this

    • David Jackson: It never made any sense to me that $GOOG would get into the hardware business. Android is growing faster than $AAPL, without Motorola.

    • heatnup: Now it only makes sense to me that they buy Samsung devices, but the powers that be don't want to admit that Motorola was a mistake....

    • heatnup: In any case, imagine GOOG owning Samsung Phones, talk about the greatest internet company with a portfolio of devices like AAPL
      8/5/13
    • David Jackson: heatnup, wouldn't buying Samsung be doubling down on the same mistake (hardware)?
      8/6/13
    • heatnup: Possibly, but Samsung is profitable!!! And most consumers think Android is Samsung
      8/6/13
    • David Jackson: Yup, but the long term strategic error was getting into hardware. PCs were profitable, but $IBM still got out.
      8/6/13
    • heatnup: I can't argue that, but the truth is phones can still be profitable and Samsung devices make a lot of money, that would look good for GOOG
      8/6/13
    • heatnup: Samsung handset division had a profit of 5.2billion last quarter alone, that gives room for moto right off...Also, GOOG has a lot of cash
      8/6/13
    • heatnup: In any case, if I were GOOG I would at least be trying, if no agreement, then no harm..
