  • Daily State Of The Markets: 2 Indicators That Make You Say, 'Hmmm' [View article]
27 years of running "OPM" (other people's money) has taught me that it almost doesn't matter what specific strategy you employ - as long as you understand its strengths (and more importantly) its weaknesses - and then STICK TO IT :-)

"Markets can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent."

Bottom line is Wall "overdoes" EVERYTHING - ALWAYS."

So, key is to understand risk is very elevated. At least that's the way I see it.

Excellent point. However, every money manager on the planet is focused on the next quarter/calendar year.

For individual investors, the message here is simple: Take your foot off the gas and raise some cash to be put to work during the next meaningful decline.

  • Daily State Of The Markets: It's Fed Day, Here's What We're Watching... [View article]
Yes, that is indeed the Fed's "big bet." They are basically betting that by warning the markets every month, for many, many months, that they are going to gradually return rates to more normalized levels, that the markets can avoid the traditional freakout. I believe it can play out this way, but there are lots of hurdles/challenges. So, it is best to keep your risk management toolbox at the ready.

Thanks for reminding readers of this fact - the VXX, VIXY ETFs are NOT investable... These are trading vehicles only!

JCCIII - First, thanks for the kind words. Second, thanks for your point on oil. I kinda lumped oil in with commodities and you are correct, this is an area that could be a decent play from a longer-term perspective. But, as anyone who has ever invested in oil knows, you've got to be patient!
