Of course you can save by spending. Saving does not mean save everything. According to Webster's dictionary saving means:

    1. Rescue from harm, danger, or loss.

    2. Avoidance of excess expenditure; economy.

    3. A reduction in expenditure or cost.

We can use number 2 and 3 to prove that you can save by spending.

  • A Keeper Stock: Constructing The Fill-The-Gap Retirement Portfolio For Every Life Phase And Any Market Environment [View article]
If you believe your income and tax rate will be lower near the end of your career, keep the traditional IRA as you will be taxed lower when withdrawing your funds from your traditional IRA.

Roth IRA's are usually more beneficial for people who will have a much higher tax rate in the future, hence it is wise to pay the lower taxes now rather than in the future on the higher tax bracket.

This is rule of thumb advice for Traditional vs Roth IRA.

Nice article again. If only more people would be disciplined enough to build up to $450,000 by retirement they would be able to receive around $22,500 with a 5 percent yield. This combined with the average $28,000 social security per couple as you mentioned would give them a very comfortable retirement. Fill in the gap portfolio should be a new class taught in schools so that we would not have the fiasco with the majority baby boomers scraping by on only their social security checks.

Good idea, but I'm sure fixing up the home is a lot of work and more money to put into the initial $90,000 investment. Then finding the right tenant is another risk. Glad its working out so far.
