ULM I couldn't agree with you more. For my money, that's where the risk/reward comes in. I've found that by investing in Calls for this type of speculative play one is able to make a solid return if they're right and lose a minor amount (relative to an equity stake) if they're wrong.
Something I forgot to include is that my position will be minor relative to my portfolio. This is a high risk trade but one in which I believe the risk/reward makes sense.
Can a Fed Move Stop the Debt Supercycle? [View article]
Mortgages are not based on the Fed Funds rate, they're based on LIBOR which is still fairly high. If we truly wanted a solution to the current crisis we'd be pressuring Europe to lower rates.
We can not keep overspending as we have. The jig's up, America.... let's take our medicine and be done with it.
The Fed's moves will have virtually no impact for months to come. This is the same thing that happened the last time the Fed began lowering rates. The rate cuts boost the market for the first one or two, and then each one after is no longer a positive catalyst for stocks. The market continues to fall because we are going into a recession, if we're not in one already.
Optimism and denial is holding this market up. The bulls are about to run into a brick wall and the bears will be able to rip them to shreds for a time. How can one not view such conclusive evidence as has been presented across SeekingAlpha and a multitude of other mediums of information and not agree?
As of 01/07/08 someone would have gained ~10% by shorting BBY since the article was published. And while now would be a great time to take profits, I still expect to see $45 or lower following a short term market rally this week. How do you like them apples?

One would think so. However as we've all experienced a stock and its company don't necessarily move in tandem. I expect small cap stocks to perform better than large cap for 1H 2008, even if the small cap companies are doing worse.
Free WSJ.com and Online Finance Media: The Ad Numbers Add Up [View article]
Hi Mick
Solid article but I'm curious of your opinion on something. TheStreet.com has developed a cyclical advertising theme on their site, or so it would seem, in which Section A promotes Section B of the site, and B promotes C, and C promotes A. A solid amount of the ad space on the inside of the page is linked to other related offerings from the same company, which I believe would provide a drastic advantage. Does WSJ.com have a collection of relevant offerings to show their viewership? If not, I suggest they may require more work to achieve what TSCM and others have done. If so, it should turn out to be a solid play.
2007 Market Review: Things May Be Better Than They Seem [View article]
omooc The strictness of legislation I believe you're thinking of will (probably) only come from the Republican party. I doubt a Democrat will come into office and enact a strict immigration law, much less enforce it. They'd rather spend that money on a countless number of other social programs.
That being said, only time will tell who takes over the White House. More importantly is whether or not that person continues the current pendulum's swing of power to the Executive Branch. I suspect in either case we're going to see the other two branches lash out and grab for some of their strength back. A strong President can get more accomplished than a weak one, so the impact on illegal immigrants will (in my opinion) be impacted mainly by this.
There should be a national database of investment results... everyone who wishes to participate would be required to have an independent audit of the accounts they manage. Maybe then people would be able to find out who's done well and who shouldn't be touching their own money. And yes, I know the plausibility of such a thing is low.

To the person not confident enough to provide a real name (User 134244)
The idea is to protect your wealth as best as possible, no? If one believes there will be harder times ahead, why would he/she not pare back their holdings? You speak as if attempting to outsmart others, to compete, is a negative thing... why such a negative bias?

To be honest, they changed the title on me. My intention was to get across how negative I view the current economic conditions. Moving forward, I see an atypical recession (a very, very strong one). My original title was "If I were your age, I'd be depressed". The editors changed it on me (which is fine) but it conveys a message I didn't intend.
Forest Earning 10 - 15% on a short term trade is worth the time, in my opinion. Keep in mind, I'm not talking about a blow-up of BBY to $20/share, but a correction against resistance.
CCinSC It may be a tired story to you if you've been following BBY for that long, but right now, I see the opportunity for a respectable ST profit. Also, the economy has not been through the issues it is currently facing for a long time ( I don't even when? ). Yes, the company's going to survive. No, their stock price is not going to $20. You're on a different time frame from me and that's where the issue is. All stocks fall 10 - 15% at times, even GOOG.
Take my article for what it is, a ST profit opportunity.
