  • Automating Alpha: Getting Started With Stock Market Functions (SMF) Add-In For Excel [View instapost]
    Hi rr76012,

One quick thing to start with also is the newest version of the add-in, looks like a new version was updated on March 29, 2013, this is under the Files -> Works-In-Progress section, sometimes that will solve problems.

Last year when MSN updated a lot of their pages a lot of the elements didn't show up, until the addin was updated.

Taking a look at smfUpdateDownloadTable to get something going.

  • Vodafone (VOD) might not be getting a Verizon Wireless cash distribution this year, Verizon (VZ) CEO Lowell McAdam hints in comments seen as an effort to further pressure Vodafone into selling its Verizon Wireless stake. At a meeting hosted by JPMorgan analyst Philip Cusick, McAdam said the top priority for Verizon Wireless' considerable cash flow will be to pay down $5B in debt due by mid-2014, rather than fresh distributions. Verizon Wireless has paid out $18.5B in two distributions over the last two years, $8.3B of which has gone to Vodafone. (previous[View news story]
Yep, price is 130 billion and VOD's shareholders will not back away from that.

How about this scenario? VOD sells Verizon Wireless, takes part of the proceeds and buys the Nokia-Siemens network.

Now everybody is out of their joint ventures and happy again.

Long VOD and I want my money lol

    Good discipline J Mintzmeyer.

I've been doing alot of selling over the 3 months, it's hard sometimes because I like these world class companies, but I have rules in place to take profits off the table once the stock is fairly valued and I have a 50% profit on them.

Seems to have worked well for me over the years.

The hard part for me right now is there are not alot of long-only value ideas out there so working my options account more than my long-only account.

Operations guys can do very well as long as they are more of a Deming focused type that focuses on continuous improvement and quality.

This can keep the innovation engine humming along just fine.

I will be reading up on Brian Krzanich to see what he emphasizes in his outlook and his philosophy.

Thanks for the data and info - I usually can't get past the first 5 before the cross-flaming starts, and it gets fatiguing, so thank your intern for going through the whole thing.

    Dave,

Did you cut Novartis because of the exchange rate caused the US payment to go down, or did the Board actually cut it since it announced the actual increase?

Exactly, you nailed it, and it made a lot of people laugh as well.

This could be a pivotal moment in terms of the branding going momentum going on.

I've commented for the longest time that on my "wish list" for an article would be from not a financial person, but a market psychologist, on why people get so out of control when it comes to mobile technology debates. These discussions typically erode pretty fast and get dirty with name calling and the debaters act like it's the Hatfield vs. McCoys as if they are defending their family and homestead.

At the end of the day (strong 2007 phrase here), I just want something that works, however admit my own biases for NOK and MSFT, having grown up with them.

But I'm not going to challenge someone to a duel over it lol.

The ad was absolutely brilliant and has reframed the view of the smartphone at a perfect time when the commodity cycle is underway. New features are now so small and incremental, and most phones now all do the same things so the message of being practical is great.

It also looks to diminish the other two brands by mocking them in the same way that the "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC," ads did.

Microsoft is doing a great job with its advertising spots lately.

Here's another great viral piece, these guys dropped a Lumia from space (temperatures at -60), and the phone suffered no damage and worked with no issues after coming back down to earth:
