I hate losses too, even those that would result if treasury yields return to historical norms. What's nice about trades like these is that 1) you have limited downside and 2) your risk is different from that of interest rate risk - so you could get some diversification away from the predominant risk in a bond portfolio.

Let me know if you have other ideas for limited-risk income investments!

  • Solar Panel Investing: Don't Fly Too Close To The Sun [View article]
I would be happy to learn more about how you were able to get rock bottom prices on solar systems. I hope these accounts are accurate, and there are some issues that need to be addressed.

There are a few key points these comments need to touch on:

    1) You would need to capitalize your labor costs to compare these to passive investments.

    2) Wiring and inverters are not free.

    3) Future returns based on a device deployed to provide utility savings are not a "sure thing." Returns would need to be discounted at an appropriate rate, and they are not attractive at retail prices.

    4) Tax incentives are not fixed in CA -- they are budgeted. How do you know what percentage a customer would be able to get if they were to install a system and apply for a subsidy in the next few months?

I love know-how and tips to make investments more practical, but I hate vague stories, wishful thinking, and denial. Quotes, suppliers, model numbers, and actual output from systems would be great.
